I was beyond frustrated. He kept insisting I act like Gabriella, but I had no fucking clue what she was like. I had no idea how she talked or presented herself. If she did look like me then that would mean she was also Latina; did she have an accent? Why he wasn’t getting that through his head was beyond me. But despite my reservations, I nodded. “Sure, if this gets me out of here and home then I’ll do the best I can to make it happen.”
“Ready?” he asked, staring at me until I nod my agreement.
He made the call and Raven answered almost immediately.
Raven: Yeah, this is Raven.
Talon: Do you have a confession ready and the one responsible to be passed in to the authorities?
I gulped, hoping that Raven wouldn’t ask to speak with me again.
Raven: Yeah, I have that set up. Your girl will be free. Now let me see my old lady.
I cringed at the term old lady, hating it more and more each time it was said, especially the way it was uttered from Raven’s lips. I swear if Ash or Phoenix ever said that to me, I’d smack some sense into them.
Talon looked at me and mouthed “you’re on.” He pressed a couple of buttons and turned the phone to face me.
Raven: Hey baby, you doing okay?
I nodded.
Raven: Fine. So, this is how it’s going to go. I want the trade to take place in our spot. You know what I mean by that, right?
Me: Yes. Of course.
I attempted to smile, but it was weak at best. How in the hell was I supposed to know where their spot was?
Me: Maybe a more public place would be best? I don’t want to tarnish our spot.
Raven: How would getting you back tarnish it?
Putting all my acting skills to work I smiled, pretending to be excited about seeing him again.
Me: Of course. You’re right.
Raven: Okay. I want to talk to Talon.
Talon turned the phone back to face him and removed the video chat. I breathed a sigh of relief, flopping back into the chair. I only halfway paid attention, but I did hear them decide on the meeting to take place the day after tomorrow at 9pm.
Disconnecting the call, Talon looked at me. “Any idea where the spot is?”
My brow creased as I stared at him. Why in the hell would he be asking me? “I have no idea. Why would I?”
With a sigh he shook his head. “I don’t know. Fuck!” His expression grew stormy and he landed his fist onto the coffee table, making the group of us jump. “Fuck!” Standing, he crossed the room in the direction of the door in several strides. “Gotta figure this out.”
Ash and Phoenix stared at each other. Ash nodded, and without a word Phoenix took off after Talon, leaving me with Ash and Lily. After what happened last time I attempted to talk to Lily, I didn’t know what to say or do, so I remained silent, looking everywhere except at the beautiful distraught-looking blonde girl.
The silence was deafening.
“What do you think we should do now?” I asked Phoenix.
Pushing himself off the wall, Phoenix crossed the room and sat down on the sofa next to Lily. “I think we’ll have to change the location. We’ll have to be firm about it. That’s our only play.”
“Even when we get there, as soon as he sees me he’s going to know it’s not his wife.”
“We’ll figure it out. We still have a couple days to find Gabriella and trade her.”
Chancing a glance over at Lily, my heart went out to her when I noticed a couple of stray tears rolling down her cheeks that she quickly batted away.
