Catching Phoenix’s gaze, I jerked my head toward the young woman next to him.
A frown spread across his face as he looked at her. Slipping an arm over her shoulders, he pulled her into him. “It’ll be all right sweetheart. Your Dad will fix this for you.” Breaking down she clung to him, burying her face against his chest she began to weep openly.
I watched the two of them, both sympathetic to the girl and surprised to see such compassion and empathy coming from Phoenix. I was starting to see a different side of him, and it was a very attractive and dangerous one for me because it made me want to learn more.

Phoenix
Another day, another sleepless night. I sighed as I sat up and slid from the bed, taking care not to wake Lola and Ash. Even an hour-long session of indulging in every inch of Lola’s body a few hours ago couldn’t keep me asleep. Grabbing my phone from the nightstand I groaned. It was 2am. I’d slept for three hours.
Standing, I pulled on my clothing that was scattered around the room, using the light on the phone in combination with the slit of moonlight coming in between the crack of the curtains to guide me. Running a hand through my hair, I left the bedroom and closed the door as quietly as possible. Maybe if I had a good stiff drink or two, I’d be able to go to sleep again.
There wasn’t much to drink other than beer in the fridge, but there was one half bottle of whiskey in the cupboard. I wasn’t even sure who it belonged to or how old it was, but it didn’t matter. I’d fucking drink it anyhow.
Taking the bottle with me, I entered the living room. My ass had barely had a chance to settle into the sofa cushion when I saw headlights coming from down the dirt road.
What in the fuck…
Leaping to my feet, I rushed to the bedroom and grabbed my gun from inside the nightstand drawer. Running around to the other side of the bed I gave Ash a violent shake.
“What the fuck?” He groaned slowly opening one eye. “What fucking time is it?”
“Someone is coming. 2am. Fucking get up,” I hissed, trying to keep my voice low. If there was someone here for trouble, I was hoping Lola would stay put and not get in the way if things got messy. She seemed to be a heavy sleeper, so with any luck she’d never know what happened.
I didn’t wait for Ash to get out of bed, instead I made my way back to the living room. Keeping my back against the wall, I moved the curtain just a bit to peek out and watch as the van came barreling into the driveway, seemingly not interested in keeping quiet.
“What the fuck is going on?” Ash, dressed in only his underwear, turned the corner. With his gun in hand he came to stand against the wall at the other side of the window.
“Some van,” I answered as the van stopped and cut the lights.
“Who is it?
“Dunno. I didn’t get any calls or messages about any visitors. Maybe they found us?”
“Fuck…” Ash hissed.
The doors to both the driver’s side and the passenger side of the van opened and someone hopped out from each side. “Get ready?” I unclicked the safety on the gun I was holding, ready to use it if needed.
Ash caught my gaze and nodded, doing the same.
