“Probably not on Tinder, since you haven’t slept with her yet,” Evan mused, before asking, “Is she at least hot?”

David just looked at Evan.

“That means she’s not,” Evan said. “No wonder your dates are ‘casual’. I’m surprised you’re still going out with her, to be honest.”

David knew he was being baited, but didn’t rise to it.

Evan cleared his throat. “She’s not underage, is she?”

“Jesus Christ!” David almost spit out his beer. “No, she’s not underage. Do you really think I’d be going out with someone half my age?”

Evan shrugged. “I was just checking. There has to be a reason why you’re being so secretive.”

“Well, that’s not it.”

“You’re not related to her, right?”

“Jesus, no, I’m not related to her. Let’s change the subject.”

“Fine,” Evan said, with exaggerated acceptance, running a hand through his wavy, reddish-brown hair, making it stick up a little. “We’ll talk about something else.”

“Good idea.”

They looked at one another for several seconds, the room weirdly silent.

“Well?” Evan prompted.

“Well, what?”

“Well, what are we going to talk about?”

“I don’t know. The bar?”

“Fuck no. No work talk.”

“How about your love life? There’s always something there to talk about.”

Evan settled back on the couch and looked up at the ceiling. “Oddly enough, right now, that’s not the case.”

“Really? I thought you were seeing someone. That personal trainer with the Range Rover?”

“Aaron? Not anymore. He was terrible in bed.”

David’s mouth quirked. “I’m sorry.”

“Me, too. He had a lot of potential, otherwise.”

“Maybe you need to cross the aisle again.”

Evan half-laughed. “It’s funny you say that, because a few months ago I sort of met a woman when I was working.”

“Really?”

“Yeah. I think that’s part of the reason I sent Aaron packing. I could’ve taken the time to give him some pointers, shown him how to fuck decently, but I just didn’t want to. I didn’t care enough to put in the effort.” Evan took a drink of his beer. “I blame that on the woman. Jesus, I haven’t been able to stop thinking about her—I actually thought about her when I was in bed with Aaron.”

“Damn, really?”

“Yeah. I’ve never done that before, so it was kind of weird.”
