PAIGE: Is that code for jerking off? You better not have found another ‘loophole’.

At that, David laughed out loud.

DAVID: LOL. No. I meant my actual friend, Dick. The ‘d’ was supposed to be capitalized.

DAVID: My bad.

PAIGE: Oh, okay.

DAVID: So, we’re still on for dinner and a movie on Friday night, right?

PAIGE: Yes.

PAIGE: By the way, what movie are we going to see?

DAVID: Does it matter? We’re going to be making out in the back row the entire time.

DAVID: If you can, try not to wear a bra. I might decide to get a little handsy.

PAIGE: Same. So if you can, try not to wear any underwear.

This time, when David laughed out loud again, he did it with serious volume. When he looked up, it was to find Evan staring at him.

“Sorry,” David apologized, feeling kind of like an ass.

“Care to share what’s so funny?”

“Not really.”

“Why not? I think I have a right to know, considering you’re pretty much ignoring me because of it.”

David took a few sips of beer, debating his next move. He didn’t want to share too much, mainly because having a conversation about fucking around with his ex-wife wasn’t something he was prepared to do, just yet.

“Okay, look,” he began slowly. “I’ve gone on a few casual dates with a woman I met recently, and she texted me a funny video of her cat. That’s all.”

Evan put his feet on the floor and leaned forward, elbows on his knees. “That explains why you’ve been a ghost.”

“I haven’t been a ghost.”

“You kind of have,” Evan insisted, then asked with a frown, “So, you’re dating a cat lady?”

“Jesus, she’s not a cat lady. She has one cat. And before you ask, no, her place doesn’t smell like a cat box.”

“So, you’ve been to her place,” Evan said suggestively, switching gears.

David sighed, having opened the door on that. “Yes.”

“Have you slept with her?”

“I’m not answering that.”

“That means you haven’t, then.”

David took another sip of beer and kept silent.

“So, where did you meet her?”

More silence.
