CHAPTER28

The deal

Chloe

“Oh my gosh,” Hunter is jumping up and down on the hotel bed like a lunatic, squealing as she goes. “How is this your life??”

My meeting with Damian Stone definitely did not go like I thought it would. I went to his office with an attitude, but ready to sign whatever the hell Van Boyd wanted me to sign. And then, our break would be permanent, I told myself.

“This is something that Wyatt’s been working on for Van,” Damian told me once we got situated. “Since he is out for his honeymoon, he asked me to take care of it on his behalf. The deal needs to be signed by the end of this week. Which is not that far away,” he started laughing and kept on organizing papers on his desk, lining everything up just so.

Damian’s move made me think of Van and how precise he was about organizing all his stuff. My heart skipped a beat, but reminding myself that I was there to sign his damn NDA sobered me up.

“Wait,” my raging thoughts came to a halt. “What deal? What are you talking about?”

“Oh, I thought Van told you,” Damian’s surprised eyes met mine.

I started thinking back, but I was pretty sure Van never told me anything about any kind of a deal. Wait, he did say that he had done something for me. Right before he broke my heart and told me we were on a break. But he never told me what it was that he had done for me. Then again, I never gave him the chance to do it.

“Okay, let’s back up then and start from the beginning,” Damian switched the order of the official-looking papers on his desk.

“That would be very helpful, thank you, Damian.” I hadn’t even realized that I was wringing my hands in my lap as much as I was. I forced myself to stop it but couldn’t. I was a nervous wreck all of a sudden.

“I will give you the short version. And I will also give you paperwork to take home with you and read. Or take it to your attorney if you have one.”

I shook my head in even more confusion. “Why would I need an attorney?”

“Because you, Chloe Montgomery, are about to make a lot of money,” Damian pointed a finger at me and winked. The move should’ve been cheesy as hell, but he made it look cool and funny.

“I… How?”

“Remember the pictures of you and Van from when you first got together? On the beach,” he explained when he saw me looking at him like a deer in the headlights.

I nodded, but I was still not sure where he’s going with this. Also, my heart dropped to my stomach when he mentioned the word pictures. I thought he was talking about the other ones…

“Well, around that time, Van’s agent was negotiating a contract for him with a new workout gear and nutrition company called Kalypsos.”

My eyes went big at that because I had heard of them. They started small but boomed out of nowhere a year or so ago.

“What does that have anything to do with me?”

“They saw the pictures of you and Van. And they added a new clause to Van’s contract.”

“What was that?” I almost whispered.

“They want you with him in all the promotional shots,” Damian gave me a huge smile, like I’d just won the lottery.

I was left speechless, unsure if I was processing all this information properly. “How?” I finally managed to ask.

“They think you’re going to be some power couple, and they want their hands on you before anyone else does,” Damian shrugged it off like it was no big deal.

“And Van is okay with this?” I just couldn’t believe that he’d agreed to this, then pushed me away.

“Van insisted that you’d get paid equally for the deal.” I’m sure my jaw hit the ground right then, and I looked like a cartoon. “He refused to do it unless they offered you equal pay.”

The rest of my meeting with Damian went fairly well. Basically him talking and me nodding like I knew what the hell he was saying. Bottom line was that I was about to make more money than I had ever imagined. And it was all thanks to Van.

I tried calling Van as soon as I walked out of there. He didn’t answer, and all of a sudden it didn’t feel right that I had agreed to everything that Damian had me sign. What if this was some sort of a test, and I just failed it?
