“Since we started having sex few days ago,” I start and see his eyes getting dilated. I’m losing him, but the next part should take care of that. “We haven’t used any protection.”
He is surprised by my words but not in the way I was hoping. “I am clean. I had to do a full blood work last week when I went to get my knee looked at. Are you?”
“Am I what?”
“Clean,” he says it like it’s obvious, except that we’re not talking about the same thing.
“Yes, Van, I am clean. Last time I had sex before you was…”
“I don’t really want to know,” he puts a hand up to stop me.
“It was more than a year ago,” I tell him anyway, and he huffs in annoyance. Was I not allowed to have sex before I did it with him?
“I’m not listening,” he is pouting like a little kid now. “And who did you have sex last anyway?”
“This guy I was seeing in Wisconsin,” I cross my arms over my chest and wait for his next smartass remark.
“Wisconsin?” he says it like it’s an insult.
“Yeah, you got a problem with Wisconsin?”
“I do now,” he puffs his chest and puts both hands on his hips. “Why are we even talking about this?”
And here’s my opening.
“Well, Van,” I lean forward, almost getting in his face while my arms are still crossed over my chest. “I just realized that you put me in such a damn sex daze that…”
His eyes get bigger with joy and happiness and the grin he gives me matches all that. I really do need to slap it all off his face. It’s like I can’t have a serious conversation with this man. “Yeah?”
“Oh yeah,” I bob my head up and down. “As a matter of fact, so much so that we didn’t use any protection!”
He seems to be confused again. “But we’re both clean.” God help me.
“We may be clean, Van, but that won’t stop us from making a baby!” My voice goes higher with each word until I yell the last one.
“Oh,” he is finally understanding what I’m saying. “So you’re saying that you’re pregnant now? Already?!”
“Oh my God,” I start laughing so hard, I am bent in half. “You are so crazy!”
“Well,” he starts laughing too, but he doesn’t sound as sure of it. “Now what?”
“Now we’ll have to get into the habit of using condoms,” I explain it to him like I am with one of the preschoolers at work. “I checked my app and thank the lord that we were not in the green zone,” I give out a sigh of relief. “But it’s coming.”
“You have an app for that?” he sounds genuinely surprised, and I want to laugh again. I can’t believe that’s the only part that stuck into his head from everything I told him.
“I do,” I shrug and chuckle.
All of a sudden, his face gets serious. He takes a couple of steps until he is right in front of me. His hands come up and cup my cheeks, and he bends down a little to kiss the tip of my nose.
“All funny side apart, I just want you to know that I am normally not this irresponsible. And I can imagine that it’s a weak excuse,” he runs his thumbs over my lips and I nip at the pads. “I haven’t had sex without a condom since I was with Brandi.” That would be the ex who ruined his friendship with Wyatt. “That was a long time ago. And I was with her for quite a while before we started doing that.”
“I’ve never…” I start before both his thumbs are on my lips, stopping me from talking.
“I really don’t want to know, Chlo,” he whispers, and this time he is not joking. “It is completely irrational that it bothers me knowing that you had sex with other guys before me. But it does. I just want you to be mine.”
I smile and kiss his fingers. “I am now.”
“I hope you’ll be mine for more than just now.”
