Lucy took another step toward me and then hesitated.

Five seconds. That’s how long it took for her to decide whether I was telling the truth or not and it was the longest five seconds of my fucking life.

Then she suddenly closed the distance between us and slammed into me with enough force I had to take a step back when I caught her.

“You should have waited until I told you what it was,” I murmured, eyes closing in bliss when I felt her silky hair brush against my cheek. “There’s no way I’m ever letting you go now.”

Her arms tightened around my neck, as if she thought I might try to pull away from her. Lucy didn’t say anything though and I just held her, too amazed she was allowing me to touch her to do anything else.

I couldn’t help myself anymore. Grabbing her thigh, I yanked her up and she wrapped her legs around my waist. Her natural scent was missing, but it was enough to feel her heart beating against mine.

“I really thought it was just me,” she whispered.

“No, sweetheart. It’s definitely not just you.” I rubbed my cheek against hers, teeth scraping against her skin, aching to mark her now that she was finally mine.

I wanted to watch her for the rest of my life – to have her near me. I wanted to feel her chest rising and falling while the scent of my pheromones and Liam’s got all tangled up in hers. Her skin, her slick, her ink…all of it needed to mine.

My teeth in her neck would make that happen.

I wanted to see the silvery scar of my bond on the back of her neck more than I’ve ever wanted anything in my life. Then I’d finally know where she was no matter what happened. I’d be able to find her, feel her. Even if we weren’t in the same room.

Fuck, she could be across the world and I’d still know where she was.

I pulled back just enough she could see the burning need I had for her in my eyes—my soul. Lucy stared into the eyes that everyone found unsettling and she looked so relieved I couldn’t fucking stand it.

The second I gave in and kissed her, everything felt right in the world, but I kept it soft and gentle. I didn’t devour her like I wanted to.

Not yet.

“As much as I’ve been dreaming of this moment, there’s something I need to tell you, Lucy.”

CHAPTER 24

Cas

Lucy was suddenly guarded and I tried not to take it personally.

“What is it you need to tell me?”

I pressed my forehead against hers and stared into those pretty, grey eyes. “The night Gideon died…I was the first one to find him.”

Her hands settled on my shoulders and she leaned back, searching my eyes like she didn’t want to believe me.

“I didn’t tell you until now because you already considered me a suspect without any evidence, someone who might have the motive and means to kill Gideon,” I confessed as I reached up to slide my thumb across her bottom lip, marveling at just how full it was.

Instead of slipping it into her mouth like I had during her heat, I wrapped my hand around her delicate throat and pulled her closer – breathing her in like I might actually be able to smell that decadent scent of hers even through the scent blockers.

“I wasn’t sure if telling you would even matter,” I admitted, rubbing my thumb back and forth over the tendon in her neck to soothe myself. “And by the time I realized I wanted to anyway…things had gotten complicated.”

Despite what I was telling her, she wasn’t trying to get away from me. Her legs were still wrapped tightly around my waist as she stared at me in disbelief. Her body wanted to stay next to mine, but her mind was churning.

She dug her nails into my shoulders until I winced and even this felt like a gift.

Lucy may not be the typical omega, but every fucking thing she did soothed the harsh edges of my alpha instincts. It was so much easier to think with her right here, close enough to do whatever it was I wanted with her.

“Did you contaminate the crime scene?” Lucy didn’t stop me from tracing her eyebrow, or the curve of her cheek. She even leaned into my touch despite how irritated she sounded.

“No, I opened the door from the inside of the private staircase, but didn’t step into the room,” I murmured, letting my lips brush against her cheek. “The only reason I was even up there was because Liam had gone down to the lobby to grab the food from the delivery guy, and I was going to ask if Gideon wanted some.”
