Lucy pushed my face away from hers, but her touch lingered. “Then what happened?”
“I caught the same scent you did – that pheromone neutralizing detergent. Unfortunately, it wasn’t strong enough to figure out which direction they’d gone in or where they’d come from.”
Leaning forward, I brushed my lips against hers, lingering when I shouldn’t have.
I needed to taste more of her, touch all of her. I couldn’t get close enough and even the way she was squirming against me to try to put some space between us was ridiculously erotic, and endearing.
“Before I could do anything other than stand there like an idiot, security called to tell me the police were down in the lobby to arrest Liam,” I told her, giving her bottom lip a little lick.
Lucy kept squirming, trying to push my face away again but it was half-hearted. I pressed into her, silently warning her to be still or she’d end up getting fucked against the door before we could finish this conversation.
“I was going to ask what the hell they had on Liam to justify arresting him on sight without the evidence to back it up, but even I can’t run down seventy flights of stairs fast enough to get there before they carted him off.” I tried to focus on telling her before I forgot what I was saying, but there was a hint of black currants in the air even now, and it was making me a little crazy.
She pushed my hand away and this time I let her, smiling at the way she tried to glare at me and mean it. “Is that everything?”
“No. It’s not.” I turned around to set her down, but she wouldn’t let go of me. “Sweetheart, I don’t want to fuck this up. I need to put you down or I’m not going to be able to think of anything other than your heat against my dick.”
Lucy let out a sigh and reluctantly loosened her grip, sliding down my body so slowly I was sure she was doing it just to torture me until I saw the way she was pouting.
I took hold of her chin before she could walk away and angled her face upward, admiring just how disappointed she looked about having to let go of me.
Never in my life did I think I’d have an omega looking like this because she couldn’t stand putting any distance between us. I wanted to say fuck it and remind her just how much I needed her, but the way she looked right now…pretty sure I’ve never seen anything quite this pleasing.
I wanted to savor it.
When I pulled her a little closer, she complied without hesitation – so trusting even with the weight of an unknown truth looming over her. “You’re so perfect I can’t fucking stand it.”
The spell broke when embarrassment washed over her. Lucy tried to push my hand off her, almost as if she couldn’t believe I’d say something like that out loud and mean it.
I jerked her closer and she gasped, hands coming up to rest on my chest, but she didn’t push me away this time. No, Lucy looked up at me with anticipation, waiting for me to decide what to do with her.
“You’re fucking perfect,” I repeated, needing her to understand. “No omega has ever looked at me the way you do and you have no idea what that does to me.”
I brushed my lips against hers, keeping it short and sweet.
Then I slowly released her, making sure she could stand on her own. “You’re the first to ever see me, Lucy. And you’re the only one who’s ever been glad to find me watching you.”
“Who else are you watching?”
God, she was so fucking adorable.
I reached out and squeezed both of her buns before she could stop me and headed to the living room with a shit-eating grin on my face. She looked so fucking cute when she was mad, like a kitten with all its fur standing on end.
But I needed to put some physical distance between us or I was going to lose myself in her again. We couldn’t keep putting this shit off. Not when it felt like I would fall apart if I ever had to leave her side again.
Sitting down on the dark lavender couch, I pretended to study the brick walls and then the floor-to-ceiling windows to my left. The view of the park was nice and the other apartment buildings had the same brick exteriors that gave off an urban vibe but it felt different than the one we had in Chinatown.
Lucy stomped into the living room and planted her hands on her hips. “Cas, who the fuck are you watching other than me?”
I studied her from head to toe, not bothering to hide how fucking delicious I thought she looked. “You’re just as crazy as me, aren’t you?”
“Excuse me?” Lucy came at me like she was planning to gouge out my eyes with her fingernails.
I grabbed her wrist and yanked her down onto the couch, pinning her underneath me. “Who the fuck would I be watching other than you and Liam?”
Her pretty eyes widened in surprise and I felt her relax ever so slightly.
“What’s with that look, hm?” Lucy held her breath when I leaned in closer, watching me warily. “Did you forget about him?”
