“I’ll wait outside,” Rhett says, and I know he’s upset about the new revelation.

“Is the baby okay?” I ask her.

She nods. “Yes, the baby is fine. You’re lucky you only got shot in the arm.”

I look at my bandaged arm. “I know.” If the bullet had hit me anywhere else... I don’t even want to think about what would’ve happened.

Cara comes back a little later and sits down next to me. “How are you holding up?”

“Not too bad,” I say. “I mean, it could have been a lot worse. It was my first time being shot, and it’s safe to say I hope that never happens again.”

She smiles, and reaches out and takes my hand. “You saved Fire, Con.”

I nod, swallowing hard. “I did what anyone would have.” Olivia wasn’t a good shot, and if I hadn’t moved that bullet would have hit Fire and not me. “I’d do the same for anyone I love,” I whisper, wrapping my arms around myself. “I’d have done the same for you.”

I feel so vulnerable in this moment, so seen.

“And I for you,” she replies, eyes gentle.

She sits with me for the next hour and we just chat. Rhett comes back in. And then Clover comes in with Fire, and they all sit with me so that I’m not alone.

Olivia almost made me lose all of this.

And I need to make sure she won’t try to do it again.

Chapter Thirty

Rhett

Con settles in at Cara’s while she recovers, and I start looking for houses for sale nearby.

“Hey,” Cara says as she opens the door. Her eyes widen as they land on the new patch on my cut. “I forgot to say congratulations, President. I know it’s everything that you ever wanted.”

“Thank you,” I say. I don’t know why but the words be careful what you wish for play in my head.

She opens her door wider. “Come on in, Con is in the living room.”

I smile at her. “Thanks.”

I find Con eating a bowl of ice cream, covered in a blanket and watching The Little Mermaid on the TV.

Cara always knew how to make someone feel safe.

“Hey,” I murmur, sitting down at her feet. “How are you feeling?”

“I’m okay.”

Sitting on the couch together, I move to lift her feet onto my lap, but then I remember where we are. Cara is obviously accepting the situation, but that doesn’t mean that I want to make her feel uncomfortable. Slow steps. “I love this movie.”

Con’s lip twitches. “You telling me the president of the Wind Dragons MC loves Disney movies?”

“That’s exactly what I’m telling you.”

Cara comes out of hiding and sits in the single leather chair. “So, I’m aware this is going to be a little awkward, but too bad. We all need to get used to this, because I love you both, and we’re all family. I’m not going anywhere, and neither are any of you.”

I hide my smile. “Okay.”

We all sit together and watch the movie. And then Decker comes home from work and also joins us. He and his partner, Nadia, have been working with Felix to see what they can dig up on Olivia. Decker has news for us.
