“So Olivia is the mother of Marko’s child. The one that Rhett accidentally shot. And I am assuming he is the father of the other baby as well.”

“What?” I say as I stand up. This really is all my fault.

Con’s eyes widen. “What? You accidentally shot her kid? And Marko, he’s the guy that you had issues with? The one who was after Cara?” She turns to look at her sister.

Decker nods. “The kid passed away.”

My face goes white. “No, he survived. He was just shot in the leg.”

Decker sees my reaction and quickly corrects himself. “No, it had nothing to do with you. He died of COVID, months after the shooting happened. She became mentally ill after that; the grief was too much. Child protective services got involved and took her newborn away from her until she can sort herself out. This happened before she met you, Con.”

“But she was at the doctor’s, she told me she was eight weeks pregnant,” Con says, brow furrowing.

“She lied. She wasn’t pregnant at all; she had her baby taken away,” Decker explains.

Con shakes her head in shock. “I can’t believe it. How did she even know that I was pregnant, though?” She purses her lips, and then her eyes suddenly widen. “I ran into a man at the café near work, and I mentioned to him I was pregnant. He said his name was Marvin.”

“Marvin? Or could it have been...” I grit out, my blood boiling at the thought of him being so close to her. He could have hurt her.

She nods. “I think it must have been Marko. Why would Olivia do this?”

“From what Nadia was able to find out, it was more curiosity. She wanted to see who you were, and who you were close with. Maybe she liked being around you because you were pregnant.”

“That makes no sense,” Cara says.

Decker shrugs. “I’m just the messenger.”

Con wraps her arms around me, her small belly digging into me.

I look down at her and kiss her forehead. “I know this is a lot, and I’m so sorry.”

She nods. “It is a lot to take in, but we will get through it.”

I look over at Cara and she just smiles.

I couldn’t give Cara what she needed, and now I know that’s because it wasn’t her I was meant to end up with. I thought she deserved more than I could give, but it wasn’t that. She was just asking the wrong person.

I will always love Cara, but we both grew into different people as we got older. She will always be one of my best friends.

But Con? Con is the woman who holds my future.

And you know what?

It’s not that awkward after all.

Cara’s right, we’re all family.

And that will win out every damn time.

Now that Olivia is in jail and we know why she came after Con, everyone is on high alert. I even met with Temper, the president of the Knights of Fury MC, to discuss the Forgotten Children, and we agreed to stay in contact when it comes to them. Temper and the Knights seem to have a soft spot for Con since she works at their garage, so they’re ready to go to battle.

As far as Marko, no one is taking credit for killing him, so I wonder if he’s in the wind. If he is, he’ll show up eventually and I’ll make it my mission to catch him.

Con saving Fire meant everything to the Wind Dragons—everyone is grateful to her and appreciative of what she did. She earned Clover’s respect by doing what she did, and that’s no easy feat.

We spend the rest of the month selling Con’s house and getting ready to move into the new one. I help Con pack up her house. We pull things that belonged to her parents that she’d like to keep, and pack the rest to take to the new house. We managed to find one down the road from Cara, a brand-new two-story house that we both fell in love with. I mean, I would have agreed to anything she wanted, but this house is amazing, with a pool, five bedrooms and two bathrooms.

It’s not exactly what I would have wanted, but her being happy is all that matters.
