“Look, they’d both kill me if they knew I said this, but I’m honestly just trying to protect him. If he gets hurt again for the same reason, I fear that he may never open up to anyone ever again,” she says cautiously.

“Your secret’s safe with me, but if you don’t explain soon, my anxiety may kill us both.”

“Trevor, uh… likes things a little different in the bedroom,” Sawyer says nervously.

“Okay?” I ask, not sure exactly what this has to do with him not dating.

“Trevor likes it a little rough in the bedroom. I overheard him talking to Rex about handcuffs and blindfolds, and I’m pretty sure I heard him say whip.”

I’m doing everything I can to steel my face, trying not to let on just how much I like what she’s telling me. I knew I liked Trevor and that I was attracted to him, but now I’m ready to kneel at his altar and beg to get a taste of him in the bedroom.

“Okay,” I tell her, shrugging like it’s no big deal. It is a big deal, but in the most delicious way possible.

“That doesn’t scare you?”

“No? Why would it?” I whisper.

“It’s just that Trevor’s had some bad luck with women and the way they’ve treated him because of his kinks. He’s very open and honest about it with women, but lately, he says he’s just been shoving that part of himself down.”

“Nah, I’m not like that. Besides, we just might be more compatible than I realized.” I smirk.

Chapter 12

Trevor

“Higher! Higher!” Addy giggles as I push her on the swing.

When she and Rory ran over to Rex and me and asked us to push them, I couldn’t hide my smile. This little girl is fun and adorable, and I love that she wanted me to play with them.

“I’m pretty sure if I push you any higher, you’re going to fly to the clouds,” I chuckle. “Besides, I thought we were going to get ice cream.”

“Yes, please,” Addy giggles.

“Me too, me too!” Rory adds, both jumping off their swings with excitement as they run over to the girls.

“You look happy,” Rex says, bumping his shoulder into mine. We both stand there watching Sawyer and Ellie with the girls, and I realize how much I’ve been wanting this.

And I don’t mean just this experience with anyone. I mean this feeling of belonging. Of happiness. Ellie and Addy have been bringing so much laughter and joy into my life, and I’ve felt such a strong connection with them so quickly.

“I am happy,” I tell him with a smile.

“That’s good, man. You seem more like yourself. More content than you’ve been in quite some time,” Rex says, his eyes never leaving Rory, who’s currently talking to Sawyer and Ellie in the animated way she gets when she’s excited, especially when it’s about sugar. “Have you slept with her?”

The girls practically skip their way over to the ice cream cart on the corner, Ellie and Sawyer following close behind. We head towards them but are far enough back that I can still speak openly. But how much do I want to tell him?

Everything. It’s Rex, my best friend and the only one who knows everything about myself that I try to keep hidden from the world.

“No, I haven’t hooked up with her,” I tell him. “We’ve only kissed. It happened that night she came to the game.”

“Was this before or after you acted like a barbarian and dragged her out of the bar when Harris was just trying to get to know her,” Rex questions, a knowing smirk telling me he already knows the answer.

Those fuckers knew what they were doing that night when they had Harris talk to her, and goddammit, I hate to admit it, but it worked. It was the push I needed to make a move.

But now, the ball is in her court. If she wants something more to happen between us, she needs to make it known.

“It was after,” I admit. “Like, immediately after, in the alley next to the bar.”

Rex starts laughing, loud enough that the girls look back at us, almost concerned. “I knew you just needed a little push.”
