Grabbing my phone, I text Natalie.
Trevor just invited me and Addy to get ice cream so she can play with Rory. What should I wear to look hot but not slutty and like I’m trying too hard?
Natalie
Giiiirl, get it. Wear your overalls and your white turtleneck. It’s cute, you won’t freeze, and your ass looks fantastic in them.
Perfect. What would I do without you?
Natalie
You’d die.
Better call me later. I want all the deets.
Fifteen minutes later, we’re all walking into the park across the street, Addy and Rory immediately taking off to the play structure, already giggling and talking about a new toy that just came out.
Sawyer and I grab a seat on the bench closest to the structure while Trevor and Rex walk around and talk about hockey.
“Soooooo,” Sawyer says with a devious look. “What is going on with the two of you?”
“What do you mean? We’re friends,” I tell her quietly, doing my best to keep a straight face.
“Friends that look at each other with come-fuck-me eyes. Rex and I are those kind of friends too,” Sawyers says as she giggles.
“No, I mean, maybe. But that’s all it is,” I blab, thinking about the kiss the other night and how he didn’t want it to happen again until I was ready.
The scary part? As much as it’s terrifying to be interested in Trevor, it also feels so right. So safe yet so exhilarating. But admitting that out loud to Sawyer feels scarier than I can handle.
“You’re telling me that nothing has happened yet, and you’re already looking at each other like that?” she says, fanning her face with her hand dramatically. “Y’all are going to melt all the snow in New York when you finally hook up. If the way he’s looking at you means anything, that man is ready and willing to devour you. “
“I mean, basically.” I shrug, turning to look at Addy and Rory, who have made their way to the swings, where Trevor and Rex are pushing them.
It hits me right here that Tom has never done this with his own daughter, and here Trevor is pushing a little girl he’s known for a few weeks with the biggest smile on his face, like he’s actually enjoying it. This might be even hotter than his forearm veins, and I constantly daydream about tracing those with my tongue.
Sawyer swatting my arm snaps me out of my daydream. “Earth to Ellie,” she giggles. “What do you mean basically?”
It’s weird for me to have another girl I can talk to like this other than Natalie, but Sawyer is so down to earth that we’ve fallen into an easy friendship, one where I don’t mind oversharing a bit.
“We may have kissed. Outside of the bar the other night.”
“I knew it!” she shouts.
“Shhhhh!” I whisper, checking on the guys to see if they heard her. All I need is for that man to know we’re talking about him. He’s already the most confident guy I know—the world doesn’t need his ego to get any bigger.
“Sorry,” she says quietly. “I just saw the way he looked at you when Harris was flirting with you.”
“He was not—” I start.
“No, he was. But that’s just Harris. It’s who he is. Besides, he was doing it on purpose to force Trevor’s hand.”
“What do you mean?”
“We’ve all known for a while he was into you, but Trevor doesn’t usually date.”
“Why not?” I say, a weird, nervous feeling taking over my tummy. Why doesn’t he date? Why do I care? Do I want to date him? Do I like him like that? I mean, duh, but it doesn’t make it any less scary.
Sawyer thinks for a moment before answering, biting her lip like she’s processing something.
