“I’m feeling twitchy, and I don’t know why,” I say.
“My brother is on the other side of this door, Flynn. All we have to do is open it, and get back to the garden,” she says patiently.
“Yeah,” I murmur. I still don’t know what I heard, but there’s only one way to know. Bending toward my calf, I grab my knife, and immediately feel better. “Now I’m ready.”
Wren eyes the blade I have tightly gripped in my hand, nodding as she turns toward the door.
“Easy, peasy,” she mutters, opening the door. “Jasper?”
Wren steps out of the bathroom, and I hurry after her, glancing around to find the hallway empty.
“Wren, where’s your brother?” I ask, my heart starting to beat faster.
“He said he was going to stay outside until we were done,” she says, voice shrill. “Jas?”
“Fuck,” I mutter, grabbing her hand, while gripping the knife in the other one. “Come on, we can’t stay in the hallway, baby.”
Walking gingerly, I look behind me, hating that this hallway is so empty and long. After a few steps, my foot slides on something, making me look down. Fuck, it’s blood.
“Wren—”
“I gave her that name, you know,” says a voice before something sharp is stabbed into my neck. Gasping, I turn to see who it is before I’m falling to the ground.
“No, no, you can’t be here,” Wren gasps, taking a step back. She’s still holding my hand, and I realize she’s trying to drag me with her.
“Run,” I croak, even as blackness begins to creep over my vision. “Baby, run.”
“I don’t think that’s going to be necessary,” the man says, stepping over me as Wren makes the decision to scream for assistance and run to find help from the guards in the rest of the house.
His feet come into focus as I watch him pull the trigger on a taser. Wren’s body jerks as she falls like a stone, and the world blacks out as she shudders and convulses on the floor.
The entire time, I’m screaming through the bond, but everything feels so hazy, I don’t know if it’ll be enough to alert them.
Fuck, how did we get here?

EVEREST
I’ve been checking on the bonds with Wren and Flynn for the last twenty minutes, and they feel oddly quiet. Shifting on my feet, anxiously, I glance at Amb and shake my head uncomfortably. Something is wrong.
“I think it’s time to come to the agreement that this isn’t going to be easy,” Shaw says, stepping forward. “We’ve left our omegas alone for long enough, and it’s beginning to feel rude.”
“Yes,” Patrick says dejectedly. “I didn’t want to have to make an executive decision in an effort not to show favoritism, but it appears that won’t be possible.”
“Favoritism? No wait,” Crowson says, looking panicked. “You can’t do this.”
“At the end of the day, you’re not one of us, brother,” Corbin says with a smirk. “You’ve also managed to make a few enemies with your little vendetta.”
“She was my mate, not a vendetta,” Crowson roars, punching our boss. Rolling my eyes, I leave Ambrose and Shaw to work this out as I walk out of the room into the rest of the house. An entire ballroom stands between me and the garden, so I’ll just go around.
Jasper limps across the main entryway, eyes wild as he searches for guards that mysteriously are no longer around.
“Jas?” I ask, walking faster to catch him as he starts to fall. “Where’s Wren and Flynn?!”
“Someone fucking clobbered me in the back of the head and beat the shit out of me for good measure. Goddamned coward,” Jasper grumbles. “I’m looking for them now, but I found one of Wren’s heels.”
Pulling his hand away from his head, I see the heel fisted in a hand that has blood on it.
