Penelope sighed. “You know, I have watchedyou two dance around each other for years, and now you’re finallygetting it on. This is exciting stuff. You do realize you will bethe town gossip for the year, right? Daniel and Amy, finally dating.”
Amy sighed. “I think it’s time to get back to work.”
“Well, are you not going to tell me whathe’s like in bed? He looks like he will keep you busy for hours, for all the right reasons, am I right?”
“I am not going to answer that.” There wasno way she was going to answer that, even if the answer wasyes.
Penelope let out a squeal and then clappedher hands. “I am so excited. I wonder if there are going to bepeople trying to judge when you get pregnant.”
“Pregnant?” Amy asked. She wasn’t about totell her best friend that she and Daniel hadn’t worn anyprotection. Besides the factthey hadn’t talked about it themselves, she wasn’t going to let herknow how careless she’d been. The sex had been off thecharts.
“I wonder how long it will be before littleDaniels and Amys are running around. They are going to be so cute.” Penelope gasped andthen reached out, grabbing her arm. “You know what I justrealized?”
“That you’re kind of scaring me with howquickly you’re having me barefoot and pregnant with a lot of littlekiddies running around?” Amy asked, giving a light chuckle.
Penelope blew a raspberry. “You and I bothknow that is exactly what you want. You’re going to be a greatmother, and I bet Daniel will be an awesome father. Imean, you both are soright for each other, it makes sense you’d be perfect at all thelittle roles.”
Amy looked at her friend, hoping she’dtake a breath. It was nice that she thought so highly ofher, though. It wasreally sweet.
“What did you just realize?”
“I think Daniel is a Reaper? You know, oneof the town Reapers of The Reapers.”
“I know what The Reapers are. There is noway of knowing who’s amember and who’s not,” Amy said.
“What would you do if Daniel was one?”
Amy stopped and thought about it, and thenshrugged. “Nothing.”
“Nothing, you’d do nothing?”
“Why would I do anything?” Amy asked.
“I don’t know, because he may or may not bea Reaper, and you know, that’s kind of important.”
Amy wrinkled her nose. “I don’t think it isquite so important.”
“You don’t?”
“No. The Reapers take care of the town. They do so by keepingtheir involvement secret, and I think that’s a good thing. Theyhave taken care of this town.”
Penelope sighed. “True, and I bet all thegood men are Reapers aswell.”
“What do you have againstthem?” Amy asked.
“I don’t have anything against them, I just… I don’t know. I guess it’s the whole secret kind of shit. You know. I can’t helpbut wonder if they have secret meetings and plot how to keep thetown this quaint little resort, touristy kind of place.”
Amy folded her arms beneath her breasts.“And you think that’s abad thing?”
“Do you think it’s a good thing?”
“I don’t know. I wasn’t around when it was a badplace.”
Penelope snorted.
“Ah, that’s right, you don’t believe theold stories of this place being run by crime lords, drugruns, and stuff likethat.”
“She should believe it,” Martha said, startling themboth.
