That is their first mistake. I’m no fool. They won’t make the same mistake twice, and I have no doubt that they will catch me. I only want a moment to breathe, think, and eat. After that, they can chase me all they want because that’s what I want.
What can I say? I’m a glutton for punishment. Still, I’m curious about what kind of punishment Rumor was thinking of.
The stunt I’m about to pull is one an omega would never get away with, but a gamma?
I glance over my shoulder at the door settling in the frame after my vicious push on the swinging wood. I can hear their voices just beyond whispering quietly to each other.
Rushing across the room, I don’t allow myself to think this through. I’ve crawled out this window once before—not under the same circumstances, but in my sincere opinion, it was just as dire.
My brother set me up on a blind date. I instructed him to wait for me at the receptionist’s desk. He wouldn’t have gotten past that anyway.
Not trusting my brother, I sent Freddy over to find out whom my brother decided to set me up with. I hid behind a plant as I watched Freddy walk over and talk to Diane, then he turned to a beta.
Look, I have nothing against betas, nothing at all, and there is no way my brother could have known that this particular beta never missed me dance a spotlight. Not once. He sat in the nearest seat every Thursday at eight sharp and threw money at me.
He was a sleazy man, a programmer with vibes that always set me off. I do not know why my brother thought he’d be a good fit. He wore a pocket protector and ketchup stains all down his checkered shirt.
I felt nothing, so I rushed in here, cracked open the painted window, and escaped. Maintenance hasn’t painted here since that fateful night, so I shouldn’t have an issue crawling out the window.
I turn every sink on to hide any sounds because…alpha hearing and all that.
The lobby sits on the ground floor, and the large building backs up to an alley, a garage, and a side street. It’s all on an incline, so there’s a slight jump. On this side is the garage side. Unfortunately for me, I’m risking the chance of Rumor finding me.
It’s a chance I’ll take.
I almost hope I get caught because if they don’t catch me, I’ll only be driven to try again and again until they do.
Damn, I’m fucked up.
I crack open the window, and cool air swirls inside the bathroom. This window is about ten feet from the ground, which is not bad, but if I don’t land it just right, I could twist my ankle. Again.
That happened last time.
This time, I crawl to the ledge and let my legs dangle. From here, the sidewalk doesn’t look that far away, but for some reason, it feels farther away than it should.
My bravado fails, and I roll onto my belly on the window ledge, just as the bathroom door swings open and Sin walks in with a smug smile on his face.
Tsking under his breath, he struts forward, his eyes dark. He rolls his tongue, his piercing gliding along his lips, and I slip a little. Scrambling for the ledge, I hold on tight.
I should be able to reach it if I stretch a little. Of course, I’d have to hang from my arms first and hope my tiptoes touched.
Except my coat snags on the window ledge, and I end up just hanging there.
“What do we have here?” Sin leans his forearm on the window and peers down at me, his face full of amusement. “A gamma hanging out of a window?”
“I’m stuck,” I grumble and try to swing up, but I never followed through with that personal trainer my sister hired for me, and well, my muscles aren’t as much muscle as they are pastries and wine.
“Oh yes, princess, you are,” he purrs. “If I were a very naughty boy, I’d make you suck my dick while you hang out of the window—”
“Sin!” I hear Bryn scold through the crack in the bathroom door. “Just get her.”
“There’s a problem,” he calls back while licking his bottom lip. He reaches for his fly, but he grabs my hands instead. “Sawyer.” His tone changes, and my stomach drops. “Didn’t Rumor tell you not to try anything stupid?”
“Are you sure that’s what he said?” I clench the frame tighter.
“Isn’t it? Even if those weren’t his exact words, that’s what he implied.” Sin peels one of my fingers off the ledge.
“You wouldn’t.” I gasp and hold on tighter.
