“Much better.”

“Your numbers look good, so I think it will be safe to send you home with your girlfriend,” Dr. Ames said snobbishly.

“Surely, you’re not disrespecting the renowned Dr. Alexis Reed,” CeCe said. “You couldn’t send me home with better care.”

Dr. Ames bristled. “My apologies, Ms. Sloan.” He turned to Alexis. “Sorry, Alexis. I didn’t mean anything.” He shrugged.

“Sure you did, Tom. I know my reputation around here,” Alexis said.

“But not anymore,” CeCe stated with a grin. “There are going to be a lot of sad doctors and nurses around here.”

Alexis chuckled, still holding CeCe’s hand.

Dr. Ames looked at them both and smiled. He went over CeCe’s release instructions and answered their questions before leaving the room.

“You don’t like him, do you?” CeCe said to Alexis.

“He’s kind of arrogant.”

“Really?” CeCe said playfully.

Alexis laughed. “I’m not that arrogant.”

“Are they going to let you go home?” Erin asked, sticking her head in the room.

“Yes!” CeCe exclaimed.

A nurse came in to take CeCe’s IV out and get her ready to go home so Alexis stepped outside the room with Erin.

“I’m glad she’s okay,” Erin said.

“Me too! That was scary,” Alexis said. She put her hand on Erin’s shoulder and earnestly said, “Thank you for calming me down. It was like all my training went right out the window when you told me CeCe was hurt.”

“I could see it on your face.”

“It certainly made me realize how deeply I’ve fallen for CeCe.”

Erin smiled. “You haven’t fallen all by yourself, pal. CeCe’s in love with you, too.”

Alexis grinned.

“Y’all are the talk of the ER,” Erin said quietly.

“What?”

“CeCe asked for you by name and the nurse said they needed to examine you before a surgeon was called in.” Erin chuckled. “Then she said you were her girlfriend. The nurse looked at her like that bump on the head had her dreaming.”

“Aww, my poor baby,” Alexis said.

“That’s when I heard her and went into the room.”

“So you had me paged?” Alexis asked.

Erin nodded. “She needed you.”

Alexis smiled just as the nurse came out of her room.

“She’s ready to go home,” the nurse said.
