CeCe reclined against the pillows Alexis had meticulously fluffed for her. She sighed. “Thank you, babe.”
Alexis sat on the bed next to CeCe and smiled down at her. “Are you comfortable?”
“Yes, honey. Thank you for taking care of me.”
Alexis tilted her head. “I love you. Of course I’m going to take care of you.”
CeCe’s phone rang and Alexis reached for it on the bed next to her.
“It’s your mom,” Alexis said as she looked at the caller ID then handed the phone to CeCe.
“Hi, Mom,” CeCe said. “We just got home. I’m feeling much better.”
While CeCe listened she ran her hand up and down Alexis’s thigh. Having her near made CeCe feel better.
“Alexis is taking good care of me,” CeCe said. “Sure, she’s right here.” CeCe put the phone on speaker. “We can both hear you, Mom.”
“Do I need to bring you anything?” Christine’s voice echoed from the phone.
“No ma’am. I’m taking good care of your daughter. I want you to know that I’m in love with her and I’m not going to leave her side.”
CeCe’s eyebrows flew up her forehead. She wasn’t expecting Alexis to proclaim her love so publicly.
“Well, that’s good to hear, but I’m still her momma and if you need me I can be there in five minutes,” Christine said.
“I’ll always need you, Mom. But don’t worry, Alexis will take care of me tonight. I’ll come see you tomorrow.”
“Okay. Thank you, Alexis.”
“See you tomorrow, Christine.”
CeCe ended the call and stared at Alexis. “Are you telling everyone you’re in love with me?”
Alexis grinned. “Is there something wrong with that?”
“No,” CeCe replied. She smiled up at Alexis with sadness in her eyes.
“What’s wrong?” Alexis asked concerned. “Don’t you believe me?”
“Yes, babe. I believe you and I love you, too.”
“But?”
“I worry that I won’t be enough for you,” CeCe said quietly.
“What!” Alexis exclaimed. “CeCe, you are so full of life. I’m not exciting and fun.”
“That’s not true, Lex. You may be the serious surgeon to everyone else, but I see you! I see the romantic woman who takes me on rooftop dates. I see the kid in you who loves to eat ice cream cones with me.”
“I’m also the woman who loves you and is going to mow your lawn this weekend.”
“What? You’re a surgeon. You don’t do lawns,” CeCe said.
“I’ve never done it before, but you’re going to sit on the back porch while I mow. I am a surgeon, but I’m your girlfriend and partner first. Don’t you remember this morning?”
“My partner?” CeCe said softly. This just keeps getting better, she thought.
