I feel another bolt of electricity race through my body, tingling from my spine to the tips of my fingers. I laugh it off. “Sorry, that’s my skirt.”

I laughs. “What happened with your blind date?”

He hands me a piece of extra cheesy pizza and a cold can of coke with condensation dripping down the sides.

“He wasn’t my type. My friend thinks because a man wears glasses he fits the bill for what I want in a date, but it’s more than that.”

“More than what?” he asks.

Embarrassment floods my cheeks, making them burn, as I struggle to find the right words. Because once I do, he’ll know that I fancy him more than my blind date. The stranger who bought me pizza from a cart, and man who blushes when I first talked to him, but looks at me now like he wants to devour me. “I just like shy guys, I guess.”

He stares for a moment before he asks, “What do you do for work?”

That surprises me. I thought he would have pushed for more information on the type of men I like.

I sigh, hating that I’ve read him so wrong.

It’s clear that I find him more attractive than he finds me. It’s possible that he’s just being polite, but it’s also likely that he feels sorry for me.

Oh well, my radar for knowing if men like me or not are well and truly not working any longer.

“I work as a secretary for a law firm, at least until I can afford to do what I want to do,” I reply.

“And what’s that?”

I can hardly give this stranger my entire life story. I cut it very short. “Become a lawyer, but I know that’s going to be hard considering I’m a receptionist without the right qualifications.”

“Oh,” he says. And I’m not sure what that’s supposed to mean.

He glances at his watch. “How much are you paid?”

My face contorts into a scowl, making it clear to him I’m not pleased with the question.

He grimaces. “Sorry, I want to offer you a job. I need an executive assistant and I’ll beat whatever you currently get. Enough for you to save for your studies.”

“Wow,” I reply as I think about my boss and how he gave me a job after a lackluster interview.

Killian picks up on my hesitation. “I’ll pay for your studies up front and make sure you have enough time off for them not to suffer.”

“That’s … Really generous. But the study is expensive,” I whisper.

“I know how expensive courses are.”

I’m contemplating how quickly I can resign from my current job to pursue this opportunity. But what if there’s a catch?

As I turn, my eyes meet Killian’s handsome face. His intense gaze, with his hazel eyes locked on my face, reveals his eagerness for a response.

I swallow. “I’d love to, but...” Oh shit, what am I doing? “It’s a bit out of the blue and I should know more about what the job entails, the hours, the—“ There are so many things I need to know.

“Take my number and have a think about it. I need someone quick, preferably today, but this week would be fine,” he says.

“I’d need to give notice.”

“I can deal with that,” he replies without hesitation. It seems he has an answer for everything.

“You’re more forthright than I first thought you would be,” I say, my gaze flicking to his.

He blushes, his cheeks turning a shade of pink that perfectly matches his charming personality.
