“Sometimes you get a feeling about someone and I know you’ll be perfect for the job.”

Just the job.

Chapter 4

Gabby

I sigh.

I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment after hearing his words. The realization that his interest in me is solely based on his desperate need for an assistant, nothing more. And no matter how much I detest my boss, I’m capable of managing him. But I don’t know if I could handle being in Killian’s presence.

No, I know I wouldn’t cope.

Oh my God, he might have a girlfriend … a wife.

He’s not asking for a relationship. He’s offering you a well-paid job.

“Why are you offering me the job?” I ask him warily, looking over the rim of my can.

Getting away from my boss is exactly what I’ve been hoping for, but...

He shrugs. “Like I said, the company needs an assistant, and I think you’ll be a good fit.” He glances around like it doesn’t bother him if I accept it or not. “Your call.”

“Let me think about it,” I say. The money sounds good, but is it too good to be true? He could be a mass murderer and trying to pull me in with a scam. “Give me the name of the company and I’ll get back to you.”After I’ve done my research.Obviously, I don’t tell him that.

From his wallet, he retrieves a card and extends it towards me. “This is who you will work for, Harrison Turner at Turner Technologies.”

“Oh, not you?” I ask, chastising myself for sounding so disappointed. Glancing at the card, I feel relieved knowing that at least the job is legitimate.

“Yes… Me too,” he stammers and smiles. “The company needs an assistant soon, like I say, preferably today.”

“Let me think about and I’ll speak to you later. Right now, I really need to get back to work. My boss is an ogre.” I roll my eyes and rub my hand over his. His eyes dart to mine. I smile and stand. “Thanks for lunch.”

“Anytime. It was the best fifteen minutes of my life.”

“The best?” I ask and laugh. “You must have a boring life.”

“Apart from visiting my friend Taylor and her children, my life is boring.”

Taylor?

I check the time again. “Sorry, I really must go. Thank you again.”

“Anytime.”

I check the time before I rush back to work, but just before I reach the corner; I turn one last time.

Killian stays put on the bench, his eyes fixed on me as I give him one last wave.

I dash around the corner and, to my surprise, come face-to-face with my boss.

“Gabby, you’re late,” he grunts, straightening his suit jacket as I step one foot back.

I lift my wrist and check the time once again. “I’ve got two minutes to get to my desk.” I give him a smile as I make my way into the building and toward to the elevator.

He grunts as he presses the button.

The doors open, and he rushes me inside.
