“It does,” Hellfire agrees. “The hatch doesn't lock properly. It's why we haven't sold it yet. Not that I expect those fuckers know that. It's not any of my men in there, and I'm surprised any of the Pit Vipers are even able to get that fucker rolling and shooting at all.” He uses his phone to check around the corner, snatching his hand back after.
Nitro, staying low, runs up from the other side. “I’ve got grenades, but I dunno if they can clear the armor on that thing. Doesn't matter that it's clunky and difficult to aim. Unless we can stop it, they can just keep going until we either leave or get turned to ground chuck.”
“Give me a grenade.” I hold out my hand.
“Sledge, what the fuck are you planning?” Havoc doesn't sound like he trusts any plan involving me and grenades, but what's he gonna do? Stop me?
“Distract it.”
“Jesus, what?” Phoenix reaches to grab my cut and hold me back, but I'm stronger than him, and he loses his grip.
Gunshots go off behind me, pinging against the front of the tank. Scares the shit out of me for a second but either it’s them giving me some cover, or it won’t be my problem for long. I run the fastest I think I've ever run in my damn life.
“Come here, you fucker!” Phoenix yells behind me. “Think you're fucking hard, huh? Gotta hide behind a fucking tank to fight?” A couple more bullets bounce off the front, ricocheting away from me.
The tank rolls forward a few feet then stops while the cannon aims. Pretty sure we're not talking real experienced tank drivers here, and hopefully that's gonna help me out. This is where we have the upper hand. The guys with the real experience and training are the old core Outlaw Sons. The Pit Vipers didn't have many disciplined members, to say the least. I bet the ones that got pulled into the Sons were still learning to tie their own fucking shoes.
The cannon fires, the blast so loud and powerful, it knocks me off my fucking feet. Jesus. I clutch the grenade like a Fabergé egg and let the side of the church catch my momentum as I slide. It's like I was hit by a fucking truck. Is this how Phoenix felt when Grinder ran him off the fucking road? No pretty lady to help patch me up and let me take a nap, though.
I don’t look back, knowing that I need to get this done regardless of who might have gotten hit by that blast. I push myself to my feet and run towards the side of the tank. Using the treads for a step, I climb up onto the side of it, just in time before they start driving again.
Well, let's see if Hellfire was right.
It takes a couple of rattles, but then something snaps and the hatch pops open.
“The fuck?” One of the guys inside looks up. “Shit.”
“Shit indeed, fuckers.” I pull the pin and drop the grenade, then slam the hatch shut and jump off the tank, rolling as I land. “Fire in the hole!”
I get about three seconds to clear out before the grenade goes off. The hatch goes flying, the whole tank lurches and smoke shoots out through the top, and some out the cannon barrel.
“Fuck,” says Hellfire. “That was a lot of fucking money you just blew up.”
“Sorry?” I brush off my cut. “Dibs on not cleaning up the inside.”
“Phoenix!” Someone yells.
We all turn to see Razor standing near the school, waving his arm to get our attention
“What the fuck?” Phoenix growls. “Crazy old bastard.”
Tank disabled, we run for the school before everyone crawls out from where they were hiding and the fighting starts up again. I think Hellfire was right, they have a large stock of firepower, but Badger doesn’t have the men to last a full attack. Between our boys and the true Outlaw Sons, we brought a lot of fucking people, and after those bikes went up, they are going to be out for blood.
“Get over here. Stay down,” Razor growls. “You’re looking for Mia, right? Grinder had her stashed in the gym with Ginger. Icouldn’t stay too close without it being suspicious, but last I saw she was fine.”
“Why are you here?” Phoenix asks.
Razor grins, his weathered face looking almost youthful. “I’m a traitor, remember? Been keeping an eye on things for Eagle-eye.” He grimaces a little. “Wasn’t time to be here long enough for them to trust me with the plans, though. Anyway, no time to chat. Go get her out of here, boys. This is no place for a kid.”
The door we burst in through puts us inside an old school gym. There are still hoops and rings hanging from the ceiling and retractable bleachers pushed up against the walls. No one's in here.
“On the table,” says Havoc. “She was here. I doubt it was the Pit Vipers drawing Mr. Bear.”
I look the other way and spot a lump on the ground. A body. Thank fuck it’s too big to be Mia. “Ginger.”
“What the hell?” Hellfire eyes the corpse with distaste, but also a little pity. “Who would shoot a woman?”
“Most women I’d agree with you. That one? More than a few people,” Havoc snaps. “I don’t give a shit. Mia was here and now she isn’t. Grinder was the only one who wanted her. Which way would he have gone?”
