Hanging up the phone, I start to feel my chest loosen a bit. I’m so close to the one thing that has been hanging over my head: getting my sunshine.

When evening comes, I decide it’s time to make an unexpected visit to The Tower to get a few more answers from Amber. Walking into the bar, I feel the strength of ten men knowing that I’m going to see her. But before I can get very far, a muscular man that I’ve never seen before steps in front of me.

“Excuse me,” I gruffly say, trying to push past him. But the meathead doesn’t let me, he moves back into my path.

I grit my teeth, trying to keep myself calm. Who the fuck is this guy? “Can I help you?” I ask him.

He doesn’t answer me. He just continues to stare at me. This guy doesn’t know who the fuck he’s messing with. This time I step into his space. His mouth starts to open but no words come out. I smirk a little. Gritting through my teeth, I say, “Get out of my way.”

“No.” That’s all he says. I know this motherfucker didn’t tell me no. I shove him back. “Move or I’ll make you.”

He gets my attention with his next words, “Amber’s not here.”

I keep my face neutral when I ask, “How do you know that I’m here to see Amber?”

His eyes never leave mine, but I see something flash in his eyes. “She's my best friend. She tells me everything, and I’m here to make sure no one hurts her.”

I clench my hands. What the fuck? Who does this guy think he is? I’m the only protector that she needs. “Listen, I don’t know who you are, but you will not stand in my way. Amber is mine.”

“I’m the one who was there for her when we were in the depths of hell. Where were you?”

The fact that he can throw that in my face pisses me off. I know that I wasn’t there, but I’m here now. And this guy will be lucky if I don’t punch him the fuck out in a minute.

“I was looking for her, you motherfucker. And now that I’ve found her, I’m here to stay.”

“We’ll see. But let me be straight with you, if you hurt her, I will kill you myself.”

I nod my head and after a beat, he does the same.

Even though he gets on my nerves, I’m glad that she has one person on her side. I’m glad she had someone during whatever hell happened to her. But he better not get in between me and my sunshine. I’m tired of listening to this stupid shit. I start to walk toward her office when his words stop me. “Did you not hear me? She’s not here.”

When I turn around to ask him where she is, he’s already walking back into the bar crowd.

While I head back to my car, I call Frank. Before he can say a word, I’m already talking, “Hey, man. I need you to do something for me. Get me the address for Amber Basile, she’s the manager at The Tower. She might have a different last name.”

“Got it. I’ll send it to you in a few hours.”

“Thanks.”

This girl is not disappearing on me. Not again.

Chapter seven

Jake

As soon as I start up the car, my phone rings. I thumb the answer button. “That was fast.”

Frank's voice rings out over the speakers of my car. “Jake, I found her address.”

I try not to get too excited, because I can tell there's more. “Her apartment is under a different name, Amber Bell. If it wasn’t for you telling me her place of work, I’m not sure I would’ve put it together.”

I grin because my guy Frank is good. I mean, of course, he’s good, I wouldn’t have hired him otherwise. “I’ll text you the address.”

“Thanks, Frank.”

“No problem.”
