I hang up and my phone dings almost instantly. I plug the address into the GPS and drive toward Amber, my sunshine, my future.

I frown as I pull up to the address of the building Frank sent me. “This can’t be where she lives,” I mutter under my breath.

Outrage runs through me as I look at the rundown apartment building. This place can’t be safe. I won’t allow her to stay here long. I bet she’ll fight me, she’s always been independent, and it doesn’t seem much has changed. I can already imagine what it might be like to spank the disobedience out of her.

Fuck…one thing at a time.

Heading toward the front of her building, I glance around and see no cameras, no lights, no doorman…nothing. I don’t like this at all.

I pull the front door open and grit my teeth even more. The door isn’t even locked. Shit, I’m getting her out of here as fast as I can.

I take the stairs two at a time as I climb up to the third level. At least she’s not on the first floor, that gives me a little bit of peace.

I keep walking until I find apartment 314. Taking a deep breath, I knock. At first, I don’t hear anything. After knocking again, I don’t hear any voices, but I can hear someone walking around inside. She’s home. I wait another minute, and she still doesn’t come to the door. I knock again louder this time, as I shout, “Amber, it’s Jake, open the door.”

Footsteps move closer and the door swings open. My jaw drops. She’s standing in the doorway in sweats and a tank top with her hair haphazardly thrown in a bun. She looks beyond beautiful.

My cock presses against my zipper as I stare. When I look up at her, she has one eyebrow cocked and a small smirk tilting those soft, pink lips. At least she doesn’t look pissed at me for showing up unannounced at her place and then obviously checking her out.

I clear my throat. “Can I come in?”

She steps to the side. “Sure. Come on in.”

I look around the apartment, and just like her office, there aren't any personal effects. No decorations. No pictures. Just the basics. When I hear the front door close, I turn around to see Amber standing there with her arms crossed, eyes narrowed at me, her mouth in a straight line.

I was in the military and then in security. Observing people is my job. I can read body language pretty well, and fuck, she is indeed actually pissed.

Before I can open my mouth, she snaps at me first. “What are you doing here, Jake?”

I don’t answer her. Taking a step closer, she holds up her hand, stopping me in my tracks. I’m very much aware that she has been through a lot, but I don’t know the details so I need to be careful with her.

Her jaw tenses as she calmly but tensely mutters, “Don’t. Don’t come any closer. I’m not going to ask again. Why are you here, Jake? And how did you find me?”

“Sunshine, I’ve been looking for you for years. It was only a matter of time before I found you. You’re mine. I promised myself I wouldn’t stop until I had you in my arms.”

She tenses with my statement. “Jake. I’m not yours.”

I step closer to her and she tenses a little more. I lean closer, touching our foreheads together, and my hand wraps around her waist when I whisper, “You are, and always have been, mine.”

She sucks in a breath with my proclamation. “Come to dinner with me,” I mutter to her.

She closes her eyes and then sighs. “I don’t know.”

“Amber, what are you afraid of?”

“Jake…you don’t understand.”

“What do I not understand?”

“There are people who are looking for me, and if you can find me, then they can find me,” she rushes out.

“Sunshine, I can keep you safe.”

She shakes her head no. “You don’t know these people. They will hurt anyone and everyone.”

I grab her chin and make her look into my eyes. “Amber, you don’t have to worry. I will never let anyone hurt you.”

Then I glance down to her lips, then back at her eyes. “Have dinner with me tomorrow.”
