Page 63 of I Think He Knows?

She joins me at the coffee bar.

“Serena, your hair looks so good today,” she says, sounding surprised.

I instantly feel defensive. I may not come to work every day looking like I just stepped off a Paris runway, but I always look presentable.

“Thanks.”

“You should wear it like that more often,” she adds. “Those beach waves really frame your face well.”

I force a smile. I can’t decide if she’s complimenting me or insulting me. Probably both.

“Are you ready for today?” she asks, making herself a cup of coffee. “I’ve really been looking forward to it, especially being new here. This is my first of many Celebrate Our School events.”

Is this her way of telling me she’s planning on being around for a long time? Fabulous.

“I’m ready.”

“Is your family coming?” she asks.

“My family? No, but my best friends are stopping by.”

“Oh, that’s awesome,” she says. “My parents are so cute. They insisted on being here, and they’re bringing their best friends. They are the best.”

“That’s nice,” I say, and suddenly it hits me she said her parents are coming with their best friends. Is she taking about Cam’s parents? Not unless they have other best friends who aren’t her ex-fiancés parents.

Does Cam know about this? He hasn’t said anything to me, not that he needs to.

Lilly takes a croissant and her coffee to one of the tables, leaving me perplexed.

I’m not sure if she knows Cam told me about their parents being friends, but she made a point of bringing them up to me without mentioning them specifically. That was clever. Lilly knows exactly what she’s doing.

“Are you alright?” Jess asks when I sit down.

I nod. “Fine…I should probably get back to my room.”

“Me too,” she says. “But I’m taking more food.”

“Good idea.”

As soon as we’re a safe distance from the lounge, I tell Jess what Lilly said.

“Oh, you know she was dying to tell you Cam’s parents are her parents besties. I’m surprised she didn’t.”

“Of course she was.”

“It’s probably driving her mad that you and Cam are seeing each other,” she points out.

“If she knows,” I reply.

Jess snorts. “She knows, Serena. Everyone knows. It’s a hot topic right now.”

A hot topic? I suspected people would talk, but I didn’t think it would be the best gossip at our school.”

“What are they saying?” I ask.

“No one has said a word to me, but I don’t think they would,” she says.

“So you haven’t heard anything specific?”
