“Not long?”
“Did you have fun?”
“Yeah,” I hesitate.
“That wasn’t very convincing.”
“No, I did have fun,” I say. “I just have a lot to update you on.”
“Okay, spill.”
I start off by quickly telling her about the escape room.
“Ohhh, that sounds fun,” she says. “Mason would probably enjoy it.”
“Good luck,” I say. “Cam and I agreed we wouldn’t be doing another escape room.”
“You and Cam, huh?” she swoons. “You’re making plans. That’s a good sign.”
Heat fills my cheeks.
“Yeah, unfortunately things with Cam got a little weird today.”
“Why? What happened?”
I walk her through Lilly showing up and how Cam was visibly bothered.
“After we left the escape room, Cam told me he was previously engaged to Lilly—our new Assistant Principal.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah.”
“Hold on—she got a job at the same school as her ex-fiancé?”
“Yep. I don’t know what to think,” I say. “And last week she showed up to dinner with his parents.”
“What? Why would she do that?”
I tell her about his parents and Lilly’s parents being close friends.
“Oh wow, that’s…I’m not sure what to say.”
“What can you say?” I exclaim. “Cam has a past, and it has nothing to do with me, right?”
“True.”
“And it’s been years since they were together,” I add.
“You don’t have to convince me,” Eliza says.
I groan. “I don’t know. It feels like every time I make progress with Cam, something interferes. Now his gorgeous ex is working at the school with us.”
“I understand,” she assures me. “But Cam obviously wants to be with you. And they didn’t get married, so that should tell you something.”
“True. He asked if we could go out again,” I tell her.
“There’s your answer,” she says knowingly.
