Page 41 of I Think He Knows?

“Serena Black, are you asking me to betray my friend’s confidence?”

I shake my head. “Of course not. But I know Jess will relentlessly ask what he thinks of her, so it would really help if you could give me the scoop.”

He nods. “Fair enough. I’ll give you the Reader’s Digest version. Some conversations between friends are confidential.”

I hold up my hands. “That’s fine. I’d rather not know the specifics of guy talk anyway.”

“You’re a wise woman,” Cam says. “Although I can assure you were not as bad as some.”

“I believe that.”

We approach my front porch and turn to face each other. And here we are. I’ve thought about this moment more times than I could count, and even though the day didn’t go as I hoped it was still wonderful spending time with him last night and today. Now we’re about to say goodnight for the evening, and naturally I would love for him to kiss me or at least let on that he would like to kiss me. At this point I’d be happy with either.

“One more day before we’re back at school,” he says. “Why do the weekends go so fast?”

“That continues to be one life’s greatest mysteries.”

Cam shifts from one foot to another. I feel like he wants to say something else, and I suddenly want to reassure him that as far as I’m concerned nothing has changed. Of course, I’ve never come out and told him of my interest, but I think he knows.

“Cam, I really had a fun this weekend.”

The corner of his mouth curls up into a half smile. “I’m happy to hear that. Hopefully that means you’ll be open to getting together again.”

Yes, yes, yes.

“I’d love too,” I say calmly.

“Okay—so we’ll talk soon?”

I nod.

He hesitates for a few seconds and then reaches out and rubs his hand up and down my arm.

“Sleep well, Serena.”

I’m frozen in place as he walks back to his car. Thankfully I manage to go into the house before he catches me watching him leave.

Chapter Ten

It’s amazing how I could be so completely exhausted from my day off. This is normal for seven hours with my students but not expected after an outing with co-workers and dinner with friends. As soon as I enter the house, I change into a comfortable pair of pajama pants and a baggie sweatshirt. I know my sister and Eliza are waiting for a play-by-play of the events of the day, but I want a few minutes to unwind before I dive into all the details with them. I wrap a fleece blanket around myself and flip through the stations on the TV until I find Legally Blonde.

When I see my laptop sitting on the side table, I get an idea. Naturally I’m a bit curious to learn more about who Lilly Winters is, other than our new assistant principal and Cam’s former fiancé.

I search her name, and her profile pops up right away. I quickly scan through the pictures. Is it weird I’m doing this? I’m pretty sure most people have searched a public online profile at one point or another, and she is a new staff member at our school. I’m just taking some time to learn more about her.

Most of the photos are with a group of women at various events, cats, pictures at a school, and a few pictures of her and Cam together -- where they look young and happy. As much as it pains me to admit, they were a very attractive couple. They look like they could be in a magazine or one of those model couples you find in picture frames.

The sound of my phone buzzing causes me to jump and quickly close my laptop like I’ve been caught doing something I shouldn’t be doing.

I exhale a sigh of relief when I see Eliza’s number on my screen.

“You have great timing,” I answer.

“Why is that?” she asks. “Are you home?”

“Yes.”

“How long have you been home?”
