“Me too,” Cam says. “Even though you made me go to the escape room and risk my life.”
I laugh as I’m reminded of our fun banter.
What am I doing? I can’t let a past relationship get in the way of something that could be amazing.
“Sorry, Coach, you signed that waiver assuming responsibility,” I remind him.
He smiles and looks over at me. “Serena, are we good? I don’t want things to be weird.”
I sigh. “Yes, we’re okay. I appreciate you telling me everything about Lilly, especially because you didn’t have to.”
“I wanted you to know the truth,” Cam says. “Like you said, the rumors were already starting.”
“Yes, apparently Britney heard you and Lilly knew each other,” I say. “Naturally it grew from there.”
“Of course,” he says. “It won’t be long before the truth is out, which is fine. It’s been years since it all went down.”
I purse my lips. I want to mention my suspicions about why Lilly chose to get a job at the same school as Cam, but it’s probably best if I mind my own business.
“Like I said, Lilly and I assured Lewis we can coexist at the school without any drama,” he tells me. “I have every intention of sticking to the agreement.”
“I’m sure it’ll be fine,” I say.
“The truth is I haven’t been in a serious relationship since the engagement ended,” he admits.
Ah, this would explain why things with Cam have moved at a snail’s pace.
“I know you didn’t ask, but apparently I’m in the sharing mood today,” Cam says shaking his head.
I laugh. “I can see that. Sometimes it feels good to just talk to someone. It would make sense for you to be feeling a lot of different emotions having your ex-fiancé around again.”
Emotions? Is that the right word? Feelings? Frustration?
“It’s always good to talk to you,” Cam says.
Heat fills my cheeks. “Thanks.”
Cam parks in front of my house, and admittedly I’m thrilled to be home. Today was the longest day ever.
“Thanks for driving,” I say. Ugh. Why do I suddenly feel like I can’t put a sentence together? We’re almost to the point of talking about the weather.
“Thanks for going with me,” he says. “And for being…for listening.”
There’s a part of me that wants to invite him inside, but maybe it’s better to call it a night.
“I’ll walk you to your door,” Cam says, jumping out of the car.
And this is just one of the reasons I adore Cam. Like Ariel said, he’s so nice and unlike her, I like nice guys.
“So,” I say as we move toward my door.
“So,” Cam repeats.
We both laugh.
“Well, do you promise to tell me everything Leo says about Jess?”
Cam stops walking and looks at me in horror.
