Page 39 of I Think He Knows?

“I got it,” Cam says.

“How much do I owe?” I ask.

“Me too,” Jess says reaching into her bag.

“Nothing,” Cam says.

“Let’s split it down the middle,” Leo tells him.

“No,” I say reaching over Cam to get it. He holds it out to his side and waves down our server.

“Please split it down the middle,” Leo says handing the server his credit card.

“Fine,” Cam says.

“What are you doing?” Jess whines.

“Nothing,” Leo says with a shrug.

“Cam?” I plead as I try to hand him some cash.

“Nope,” Cam replies, holding up his hands.

“I’m just glad I was invited out tonight,” Leo says. “Otherwise I probably would’ve eaten cereal at home.”

“I love cereal,” Jess says.

“So do I,” Leo admits.

“What he means is he never goes out,” Cam says. “I’m usually the one dragging him places.”

“That’s not true,” Leo retorts. “I go out—to work and the store.”

“Exactly,” Cam says.

“And the gas station,” Leo continues. “And Chick-fil-A.”

We all laugh.

“Thank you for buying dinner,” Jess says. “Both of you.”

“Yes, thank you,” I add.

The four of us walk outside and stand in front of the restaurant, chatting.

“I had a great time,” Leo says. “We should get together again sometime.”

Jess nods casually, but I know she’s freaking out.

We all say our goodbyes, and Cam and I walk back to his car. Now that Jess and Leo are gone, we’re both quiet for a few seconds.

“Leo had a really good time with Jess,” Cam says, finally breaking the silence.

“I think so too.”

“Did you have fun?”

“Yes, I did.”
