“I can’t believe I’m here at this dinner with Cam,” I say to Eliza.
“Life can certainly take some unexpected turns,” she says, glancing at her sparkling engagement ring.
“Yes, you’re marrying Mason. The cute guy who lived in the apartment upstairs. Did you ever think borrowing his vacuum would lead to this?”
She shakes her head. “Not in a million years.”
“Has Caitlin said anything to you?”
“Just congratulations and offered to give me some wedding planning advice since she’s the expert now.”
I rub my hands together. “Ohhhh, you have to tell her about Carlie King.”
She laughs. “Mason is going to announce it tonight.”
“Yay,” I squeal.
“You’re bad,” she says shaking her head.
I pick up a celery stick and start munching on it.
“Are you nervous about how things are going to be at school?” she asks.
I shake my head. “Surprisingly, no.”
“Good. Cam is committed to you.”
I sigh. “I know he is. I’m mad at myself for doubting him.”
“Don’t be. It’s been a long journey for the two of you.”
I glance over at Cam, who’s still chatting with Grandma’s friend.
“It has been…but I feel like our journey is just beginning.”
Eliza smiles. “I can’t wait to see what happens. Maybe you’ll have one of these on your hand before you know it.”
I inhale sharply. “One day at a time.”
After dinner, Eliza’s mom starts talking about the wedding, which is the perfect segue for Mason to make the announcement. I watch intently waiting for the fireworks.
“I have great news,” Mason announces, smiling at Eliza. “My boss’s wife happens to be best friends with the fairy godmother of weddings, and she’s offered to plan our day.”
My eyes dart to Caitlin, whose jaw has dropped to the floor.
“Carlie King is planning your wedding?” Caitlin shrieks.
Eliza nods, grinning from ear to ear. This moment is pure gold. Mrs. Hawkes starts googling Carlie King weddings, and everyone is talking at once.
“Congrats,” Caitlin says insincerely before walking out of the room. She’s so salty right now.
“Best moment, ever,” I say, holding up my hand to give Mason five.
“What did I miss?” Cam asks.
“It’s a long story, but basically Eliza is using a famous wedding planner. Caitlin tried for months to get in with her, and she’s mad about it.
He nods. “Got it.”
