“Let’s go axe throwing,” Jess exclaims, interrupting our conversation. “I’ve never been.”
“Me neither,” I say.
“Well, then we should do it,” Cam says.
“I’m ready when you are,” Leo replies.
“Should we make a run for it?” I ask with a laugh.
The four of us exchange looks.
“Serena and I will walk out first,” Jess orders. “You guys wait a minute and then follow us.”
She makes it sound like we’re on a top-secret mission.
“Or we can all just get up and leave,” Cam suggests with a shrug. “We don’t have to stay here.”
Leo asks Jess if she wants to ride with him, and she manages to remain calm. Honestly, she deserves a medal for her performance.
The four of us get up and walk out of the restaurant without causing a commotion.
“They are so cute together,” I squeal as soon as Cam and I are in the car.
“So cute,” he swoons.
I playfully punch him on the arm.
“Leo saw Eliza and Mason today, and they were all on their best behavior,” I tell him. “Everyone has finally moved on.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t have more time to talk to them,” Cam apologizes. “Between helping with the event and dealing with my parents, I had my hands full.”
I bite my lower lip.
“Serena, I feel really bad about today,” he continues. “I know it’s a weird dynamic with my parents and Lilly’s parents. Even after all these years, they still try to control the situation.”
“I could tell.”
He shakes his head. “It doesn’t matter what they think. I’m happy with the direction my life is headed.”
He reaches over and takes my hand in his. My heart is racing, and I know I should tell him about Lilly’s mom. I don’t want to keep things from him, but we’re finally spending time together without anyone trying to get in the way. Everything else can wait for now.
I lean over and kiss him on the cheek. “Let’s just enjoy the rest of our night.”
“I love that idea.”

Who knew that I, Serena Black, would be so good at axe throwing? Cam and I are winning by a lot. And every time I throw the axe, it hits the perfect spot. Maybe I’ve missed my true calling? I wonder if I’m the first kindergarten teacher, axe throwing expert ever.
“Serena, there’s no way you haven’t done this before,” Leo says in awe after I hit my latest mark.
“I swear I’ve never picked up an axe in my life.”
“She’s a natural,” Cam says proudly. “Serena never fails to impress me.”
“I’m terrible,” Jess moans after her axe falls to the floor once again.
It’s so nice to be able to be with Cam without other people trying to get his attention.
