I cover my mouth as I yawn.

“Tired?” Cam asks.

I nod.

“We should probably call it a night. Team Leo and Jess don’t have a chance to rebound,” he announces.

“Whatever,” Leo says. “I demand a rematch soon.”

“Fine with me,” Cam says. “Name the time.”

We each take one more turn, and then Cam and I clench the win. We really do make a great team.

The four of us walk out together and say our goodbyes. Leo is taking Jess to her car, and I’m expecting a phone call or text after he drops her off.

“Do you have plans tomorrow?” Cam asks once we’re in the car.

“You mean other than sleeping and recovering?”

He chuckles. “Yes, other than that?”

I yawn. “Nope.”

“Will you have dinner with me?” he asks. “I know it’s a school night, but maybe we could do something early.”

“Sure. I’d love to.”

Of course I’ll take any opportunity I can to spend time with Cam.

We both grow quiet, and I look out the window as we drive. This is really happening—everything I’ve been waiting for. So many days I’d leave school hoping my friendship with Cam would grow into more. I should be happier than ever. Unfortunately there’s an uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. Maybe I’m just tired after such a crazy day. Hopefully I’ll feel better tomorrow.

Chapter Eighteen

I wake up to several text messages from Mason begging me to call him regarding Eliza’s birthday. He must be freaking out.

“Are you panicking?” I ask as soon as he answers.

“No…yes…I don’t know,” he wails.

“Everything is going to be perfect,” I assure him.

“I hope so,” he says unconvincingly. “I’ve been talking to her mom. They have the party plans all under control.”

“That’s good,” I insist.

“Yeah…”

“But? Mason—what’s wrong?”

“Do you think I should do the other thing a different day?” he asks.

I’m assuming the other thing he’s referring to is the proposal. He can’t even bring himself to say the word.

“No, why?”

“I don’t want to overshadow her day,” he says. “What if everyone is so caught up in the engagement news that they ignore her birthday?”

Whoa. He’s really in his head.
