She hurries off, and I owe her for giving Cam and me a few minutes alone.
“So good,” I say. “My class is wonderful. How is everything with you?”
I motion toward his parents, who are intently listening to Lilly giving what could rival an award acceptance speech. She really thrives on attention.
He shrugs. “Fine.”
“Your mom seems nice,” I tell him. “Lilly was introducing her to everyone.”
He shakes his head. “That figures.”
Out of the corner of my eye, I see Lilly’s mom watching us, a look of concern on her face.
Meanwhile, Lilly finally wraps up her monologue, and Ms. Lewis reminds everyone about the activities that are still going on.
“Cam,” his mom calls.
“Get ready,” he says under his breath.
“Mom and Dad, this is Serena Black, she?—”
“We’ve already met,” Michelle says. “She’s one of the kindergarten teachers here.”
Cam nods. “Yes, and?—”
“Is that Leo?” Michelle exclaims interrupting him. “Leo, hello, over here.”
She dashes over and throws her arms around Leo, who appears a bit caught off guard by her greeting.
Cam lets out a frustrated sigh.
“Hi, Mrs. Forsythe, Mr. Forsythe,” Leo says.
“It’s so nice to see you all together again,” Cam’s mom says.
I’m assuming she’s referring to Lilly too.
Cam’s parents continue talking to Leo.
“I’m sorry,” Cam whispers.
“It’s okay.”
“I think I’m done celebrating our school,” he adds. “Is it time to go yet?”
I giggle. “Soon.”
“Cam, your dad and I were discussing a golf game,” Lilly’s father says, placing his hand on his shoulder. “Are you in? It’s been a while since I’ve had the opportunity to beat you on the course.”
Cam chuckles. “Beat me? I recall you’ve only beat me once.”
Lilly’s mother comes up beside me. “The men in our family love playing golf together.”
I smile and nod. Her comment was completely intentional. She wants me to know they consider Cam a part of their family. Now I know where Lilly learned it.
“That was fun,” Lilly says rejoining us. “I wish we could do this every month. Oh, I should talk to Ms. Lewis about that. We could host some smaller events, maybe monthly or quarterly. I need to write this down.”
She takes out her phone and starts typing.
