“Your father and Cam are having a disagreement about golf again,” Lilly’s mom tells her.
Lilly rolls her eyes. “Daddy, leave him alone. It doesn’t matter who wins.”
Suddenly, I feel very out of place, like I’m infringing on their family time. Cam’s parents are still talking to Leo, and I’m standing with Cam, Lilly, and her parents. Ugh. I need to get out of here.
“I should probably find my friends,” I tell them. “So nice meeting you all.”
I quickly make my escape before Cam has a chance to stop me. I’ve had enough of Lilly trying to shove their relationships down my throat.
Chapter Sixteen
I finally find Eliza and Mason sitting at a table with a pile of baked goods.
“Did you buy all that?” I ask.
He shrugs before taking a bite of a large chocolate chip cookie. “Yes, I did. I’m now considered a major benefactor for your school. I think they should hang my picture in the office.”
I laugh. Typical Mason.
“Is Coach Cam still with his family?” Eliza asks.
“Yep, all of them,” I say. “He was arguing about a golf game with Lilly’s father when I left to find you.”
“Let me talk to him,” Mason begs. “I’ll go easy, I promise.”
I sigh. “What exactly would you say?”
“I’ll ask him about his intentions?” he exclaims.
“His intentions?” Eliza repeats. “You’re not Serena’s dad.”
He shrugs. “And I’ll make him aware of how protective we are of you and he’s lucky he even has a shot.”
I cringe.
“And then I’ll give him a warning not to hurt you or else.”
Ugh. I don’t think so.
“Let’s hold off for now,” I tell him.
“Cam’s coming over here,” Eliza says in a loud whisper.
I turn around just as he approaches us.
“Hi, everyone,” he says. “Serena, can I steal you away from your friends for a minute?”
“You can talk in front of us,” Mason interjects which makes Eliza squeeze his arm.
“Ow,” Mason shrieks.
Ugh. This day is turning into a complete circus. Is it time to go home yet?
“Sure,” I reply.
Cam places his hand on my lower back and guides me away from my friends. Naturally his touch causes a tingle to rush through me.
“I’m so sorry,” he says as we walk. “My parents and the Winters are like a wrecking ball, leaving destruction in their path as they go.”
