Page 67 of I Think He Knows?

“Apparently, they wanted to surprise him,” I tell her. “Cam wasn’t amused by the idea.”

“Oh—well, I guess that makes sense,” she says. “Did you meet them?”

I shake my head. “No. I’ve been in my class all day. And I’m not expecting Cam to introduce me just because…”

“Because he likes you,” she sings.

The corner of my mouth curls up as the image of Cam and I kissing in my classroom flashes though my mind.

“Exactly,” I say. “Anyway, let’s go eat. I’m starving.”

“Ms. Black, I won this dog stuffed animal,” Ella yells as soon she sees me. She runs over to me and thrusts the fluffy toy into my hands.

“Aww…it’s such a cute dog,” I say, hugging it to my chest.

“I’m gonna get another prize,” Ella announces.

“Good for you, Ella,” I say. “I can’t wait to see it.”

“Umm,” Jess exclaims, her gaze on something across the courtyard.

“What’s up?”

“I think I found Cam’s parents,” she whispers. “There is a group of people sitting over there with Cam and Lilly.”

I quickly turn around, and sure enough, there they are. Naturally they look like one big attractive, happy family. I can tell which one is Cam’s father because he looks just like him only older. Admittedly I feel a tiny twinge of jealousy seeing them all enjoying the afternoon together. What can I say? I’m human.

“You should go over there,” Jess suggests.

I shake my head. “I don’t?—"

“He’s here,” Jess squeals. “He showed up. Leo’s here.”

“Where?”

“He’s in line at the taco truck,” she says, pointing in the direction of the big neon green truck.

She runs her fingers through her hair and quickly checks her reflection on her phone.

“Perfect, because that’s where we’re going.” I link my arm in hers and drag her toward the food trucks, which also happen to be in the opposite direction of Cam, Lilly, and family.

Leo looks over as we approach the line, a broad smile spreading across his face.

“Hello, ladies,” he says cheerfully.

“Hi, Leo,” Jess says.

“You made it,” I say. “Thanks for coming today. Eastern Lake appreciates you.”

“I’m happy to help,” he exclaims. “I’ll be here every weekend if this taco truck is here.”

We join Leo in line, and he and Jess start chatting. When I glance back over, I see Cam and Lilly still talking to their parents. I check my phone again, and there are still no texts from him.

“Serena,” Jess calls dragging me out of my thoughts.

“What?” I say absently.
