She raises an eyebrow.

“Sorry, I zoned out.”

She gives me a concerned look and throws a glance back at the happy family.

“Have you talked to Cam yet today?” Jess asks Leo.

What is she doing? I shoot her a look.

“Nope. The taco truck is my first stop. Seeing Cam is way down the list.”

Jess giggles. “I understand that.”

“Where is he, Serena?” Leo looks around and then squints his eyes when he spots him.

“Whoa. Are those Cam’s parents and—” He stops mid-sentence and glances at me.

“Apparently they came to surprise him,” I say with a shrug.

“Do you know his parents?” Jess asks him.

“Yes,” he says.

“Do you know Lilly?” Jess asks innocently.

Leo nods. “Sure do.”

I’m not sure what to think about his answer.

“She’s our new assistant principal,” I add cautiously. I’m sure everything we say is going to get back to Cam, so I’m careful with my words since we’re talking to his friend.

“Yeah, I heard she got a job here,” Leo says just as it’s his turn to order his food. “Okay, what are you having? It’s my treat.”

We try to protest, but Leo continues to insist, so we place our orders.

There’s no more discussion about Lilly or Cam, and I’m not bringing it up again. While we’re waiting for our food, I spot Eliza and Mason. Ugh. This day continues to get more complicated.

“I’ll be right back,” I tell Jess and Leo.

I rush over to my friends. “Hey, guys.”

“Hi. How’s it going?” Eliza asks, giving me a hug.

“Um, it’s fine,” I say unconvincingly.

“What’s wrong?” Eliza asks. She knows me so well it doesn’t take much to see I’m distracted.

“Where’s the coach?” Mason exclaims. “Did he do something to upset you?”

“No,” I insist. “He’s around here somewhere, with his parents.”

“Really?” Eliza asks. “Did you meet them?”

“No…not yet.”

My phone buzzes, and it’s a message from Jess telling me the food is ready.

“Just to let you know, Leo’s here,” I tell them. “He came to see Jess, and he just bought us lunch, so hopefully everyone can be friendly and polite.”
