“Huh,” I say.

“Thad?” Taylor asks.

I raise an eyebrow. “Don’t you mean Chad?”

“Whatever his name is,” Taylor says, waving her hand.

“Neither; that was Dominic.”

“Thought he was still in prison?”

“Guess not,” I say, tossing my phone in my purse.

“How about we stop somewhere and grab one drink to unwind?” Taylor suggests.

“You gonna go home with me after to make sure Dominic doesn’t come over?” I challenge, seeing right through my friend.

Taylor crinkles her nose. “Sorry, you’re not my type.”

“Why the hell not? I’m a catch,” I inform her.

“You are,” she agrees. “Too good for that piece of shit Dominic.”

“Don’t hold back, Taylor. Tell me how you really feel,” I say dryly.

She holds up her hands. “Sorry, but you know I was never a big Dominic fan.”

I snort a laugh. “Oh, trust me, I’m well aware.”

“Let’s stop at The Diamond bar,” she suggests.

“We’re those pathetic losers who hang out at work on their day off?” I gasp.

“I take exception to that! It’d only be pathetic if we hung out on the gaming floor.”

“Uh-huh,” I say. “So picking The Diamond bar has nothing to do with you wanting to keep tabs on your girlfriend while she bartends,” I challenge.

“No,” she says adamantly. “It has everything to do with my girlfriend hooking us up with free pretzel bites.”

I raise an eyebrow. “Why the hell didn’t you lead with that? Let’s go.”

Chapter

Fabio

I rap my knuckles on the door, and a frail voice calls, “Come in.”

Stepping inside the luxurious assisted living suite, I close the door behind me. My target is seated on the couch watching a game show. “Hello, Patricia?”

The old woman doesn’t acknowledge me. Walking over to her, I squat down in front of her to check the identification bracelet on her wrist, making sure I’ve got the right woman. “Patricia, it’s time for your medication.”

She notices me for the first time. “Who are you?”

“I’m a new nurse,” I lie. “It’s time to take your medication,” I repeat myself firmly, having only about ten minutes before the “glitch” in the hallway security cameras is noticed.

The woman holds out her hand without further question, as I serve up death in capsule form. Darius is usually tasked with this sort of thing, but Romeo needed my expertise for this particular hit.
