I wonder what she’s talking about, keeping them so engaged. Then, I conclude whatever she says is unlikely to hold my attention. Convinced that no woman those guys find interesting could enthrall me for two seconds, I remember my drink and take a sip.
When I look up, I realize the woman is watching me. Our eyes lock. We stare at each other for a moment, and for some reason, I’m unable to look away.
Maybe she’s not that interested in Ethan or Ryan and is just indulging them. Why else would she be looking at me instead?
Before I get too deep in my thoughts, a couple of attractive ladies cross my line of vision. Their shouting pulls my focus. I take a sip of my drink, reluctantly listening.
“Did you get his number, Amber?”
“Of course, I did. He’s hot. And he says he works in tech. Every tech guy on the West Coast has money.”
“Don’t be a gold-digger, Amber.”
“Bitch, please. The cost of living in Los Angeles is high as fuck! Let him think I’m interested in all that tech shit.”
I turn my head to get a better look at the ambitious Amber. She is gorgeous. Olive-toned with long, black hair and doe eyes, paired with a body that looks like a plastic surgeon made it. Someone who would captivate my interest if she had anything intriguing to say. I sympathize with her target.
My last girl may have been putting on an act, but at least she wasn’t a gold-digger.
I look to see what the trio is doing. The woman is flashing a smile at Ethan.
Then she turns her head in my direction again. I watch as she studies me from bottom to top. By the way that her gaze lingers in certain places, it’s clear she likes what she sees. Once again, our eyes meet.
Her lips part with a look of surprise. I wonder what it would be like to kiss those lips. My mouth feels dry, so I take a sip of my drink.
She breaks the connection a second time and moves to take a drink.
After a while, they all make their way to the dance floor, and I watch as she rebuffs a random guy trying to cut in.
Well, if nothing else, she’s committed to her targets.
I down the rest of my drink and grimace. Now is as good a time as any to tell them I’m leaving.
I stand and pivot towards the dance floor, but they are no longer there. Looking around, I see Ryan at the bar with none other than Amber. Ethan and the girl are gone.
Maybe Ethan got the girl, after all, I think as I make my way to Ryan.
“Hey. I’m gonna bounce.”
Ryan glares at me, clearly annoyed. “On foot?”
“No, I’ll call a car.”
Ryan sighs. “Just hold on, man. We’ll be out of here soon, okay?”
Amber hands Ryan a piece of paper. “Here’s my number. Call me, okay?”
Ryan smiles and watches Amber walk away before crumpling up the paper and tossing it on the bar.
“I always knew you were a smart guy,” I say to Ryan.
He looks at me with a puzzled expression.
“I’ll tell you when we leave. I’m gonna find Ethan so we can get out of here sometime tonight,” I tell him.
I make my way around the club, rounding a corner to find Ethan, but instead, I bump into her. The same girl my friends have been drooling over.
“Oh my God, I’m so sorry. Oh. Hello,” she says. Her voice is smooth and sexy. I want to hear more.
