“What the hell have you done?”
I growled.
Emmett growled.
“Did he just growl at me?”
“We're in a bit of a situation here,” James said calmly.
“Ya think?”
“They have breached the house and we are currently barricaded in the bedroom. Are you close?”
“I'm here. Any thoughts?”
“Tell him to order them all to stay away from her. No one touches her and her heat scent is to be ignored,” Emmett barked.
“Did you hear that?”
“Yeah. I can try.”
There was a loud noise behind me, and I jumped forward.
Emmett was guarding the closest door, keeping me pinned inside and unable to escape, but it sounded as if someone was tearing the exterior apart trying to get into the house, trying to get to me.
I shifted in my moment of panic.
“Please don’t let them get me,” I begged Emmett.
If I couldn't leave, then I needed help to fight until a moment presented itself for me to run.
He turned around to face me and for a moment it felt as if the two of us were the last people alive in this world. I could have stood there staring into his eyes forever. The sounds around us were muffled in the background. The only thing that mattered right then was him.
Mine, my wolf said contently.
I didn't fully understand what that meant, but I knew in my heart that I could trust this man.
It seemed almost comical to think about. I shouldn't trust him. I couldn't trust anyone. But in that moment, I knew it was true—I trusted Emmett.
Another noise broke the connection that seemed tangible between us and I quickly shifted back and readied myself for the fight of my life.
Emmett shook his head and looked a little bewildered, like he wasn’t sure if he just imagined me shifting or not. I certainly hadn’t meant to because being in my skin made meeven more vulnerable, but I was desperate. I hated it, but I needed his help at this point.
The clawing, growls, and fighting suddenly stopped and an eerie silence fell upon us.
It was the scariest moment of my life, and that was saying something. I’m pretty sure my heart actually stopped beating for a minute.
“What's going on?” Austin asked.
“I don't know. Check out the window,” Emmett said.
He still refused to leave his station guarding me.
Austin peeked out the window between the blinds. “They're just leaving.”
They're leaving?I thought. But that didn't make any sense.
Someone burst in through the door and my hackles raised as a growl escaped me.
