It was smaller than Luke’s but I walked in like I hadn’t seen them before. It was done in the same brown wood with a small table and closet on one side. The bed was in the middle of the room and by the door was another door, which I assumed was the bathroom. I could see mine and Ethan’s luggage sitting in the middle of the room. I was thankful that he had been egotistical enough to think that I would show up and he brought my luggage.

“Nice,” I said and turned to look at Ethan.

He launched himself at me and wrapped his arms around me. His mouth went to mine and his tongue pressed up against my lips, demanding entrance. I put my hands on his chest to stop and push him away. I was repulsed by his touch, by the feel of his lips on me. I couldn’t believe less than two days ago I thought I was in love with this man. I couldn’t believe I had wanted to and had slept with him.

It took everything in me to not yell at him to get away from me. I wiggled myself out of his embrace and stepped away from him. He gave me a devilish smile as if he thought I was playing hard to get and wanted him to chase me.

“Ethan, wait,” I said.

“Why? We need to test out the bed,” he teased.

It was what he had said when we had gone to any hotel room. I had thought it was a quirky way for him to get me into bed. Now, it just annoyed me.

“I’m sure the bed is just fine. We need to talk.”

“But I don’t want to,” Ethan said and walked towards me.

“Do you forget that we broke up last night?” I asked.

“We didn’t. You got angry and said things you didn’t mean. I knew you would come to your senses. Don’t worry, babe. I forgive you.”

“You forgive me? Are you serious?” It seemed inconceivable to me that Ethan honestly thought he was the wronged party in this scenario.

“Well, yeah. You left me at the restaurant. Do you know how that made me look? Do you have any idea how embarrassing that was for me? It was a good thing Marla was there for me.”

I didn’t have to think too hard about what he meant by Marla, the server, being there for him. I wondered if he had taken her back to his place last night but I quickly realized I just didn’t care.

“Why didn’t you bring her on the boat?”

“Mom would have shit if I had. I don’t know what she would have done to you if you hadn’t shown up when you did,” Ethan said.

His mother always had a soft spot for Ethan and he could do no wrong in her eyes. It didn’t surprise me that he would have his mother blame me for my absence, not him. I felt like we had been talking in circles since we had walked into the cabin. I wanted him to understand we were over, but he wasn’t getting it.

“This isn’t working. We aren’t working. You must see that,” I said.

“We’re fine. We’re here. We’re on this trip. We’re going to have a good time. You will get to know my parents better and then we’ll be married. Everything will work out.”

“Ethan, I don’t think we’re right for each other. I don’t think this is going to work out.”

“Mom is very excited about going dress shopping with you. She already has some ideas.”

There was no way I was ever going to go dress shopping with his mother nor was I going to let her pick out my dress. She was a nice woman but I didn’t want to think what she thought was an appropriate dress for me to marry her son in. But that wasn’t the point.

“Ethan,” I said and shook my head.

“Dad can be a little abrasive but that’s just his way. He isn’t good with people and doesn’t like to make new friends. He will come around, you’ll see, and he’ll love you as much as he does me.”

I couldn’t help it, I laughed at Ethan’s comment. I wanted to tell him if he only knew just how much his father loved me. How much his father had shown me that love less than ten hours ago.

“Marla was telling me about some great places we should check out for the wedding when we get back.”

“You talked about wedding venues with a woman you picked up at the restaurant we were at last night?” Was I hearing him right?

“Not venues, more places to have a party. Isn’t that what a wedding is? Just a great excuse to get dressed up and party? Like a birthday, but you only do it a few times.”

“You plan on having a wedding a few times?” I crossed my arms and glared at him.

“There’s one that has a slide in the middle. How cool is that?” Ethan asked.
