“I’m almost done here.”
Greg drops his fury to me. “How am I supposed to love you? Jesus Christ! Are you insane? You want to know the truth? Any love I had for you flew out the motherfucking window the day you left!”
“Did you tell everyone why I left?”
Val grips my shoulder as Hadley jogs over to Greg. “What happened?”
I reply, “Nothing. I’m just an idiot and thought your best friend changed.”
Val whispers, “Simone, come to the dugout with me.”
I glare at Greg as the breeze ruffles his hair. “So tell me. Did you sleep with your girlfriend?”
At first, it appears he’ll say no, but he shrugs. “Does it matter if I did?”
“While screwing me?”
He looks at Nico instead of me. “Sounds like Tansy told you the truth.”
“That makes one of you, asshole! You don’t even care!”
Greg looks around and snaps, “You’re humiliating yourself.”
Glancing at everyone, I frown at their judgmental expressions before glowering at Greg. I never wanted to choke someone so much in my life. And my brother usually is chokeworthy. “Apparently, you don’t know me. I don’t embarrass easily. My only shame is wasting time with you for far too long. I deserve better than you.”
The pain I saw earlier returns, but he tosses it aside with an indignant frown and mutters, “Awesome. Have fun with that.”
Amos goes over to Greg while Nico moves closer to me like he’s Greg’s bodyguard or hitman. Nico turns his back to Greg and whispers, “Simone, please just leave him alone. Something’s going on with him, but he won’t talk about it here.”
“I won’t take much longer.”
When I look at Greg, he looks away with me with a wince. I argue, “Even when you kicked me while I was down, it never changed how I felt about you!” Greg twists his face in confusion or denial. I don’t know which. “But not anymore! I’m done saving myself for you!”
Hadley grabs Greg’s arm and slides in front of him to say something I can’t hear. His angry eyes move to her face and his anger subsides somewhat. I don’t need to ask whose side she’s on. It’s never mine.
Finn sweeps between us. “What’s going on here?”
Since everyone is watching us, I say, “God, Finn! I’m handling it!”
“Are you two arguing again?”
Greg says, “You could say that, Coach. Your sister regrets everything about me. So touching and sweet.”
Betsy asks, “Are you divorcing already? Holy crap! This has to be a record! I knew it’d happen, though.”
Patrice nods and points at Greg. “Shame on you, Rod, for cheating on your wife. Haley cheated with those dancing waiters, but you shouldn’t have done the same to Simone.”
“No, he did worse!” I yell, losing my grip.
Greg squeals, “Seriously? You didn’t give me a chance to make up for my mistakes! That’s why I don’t fucking love you!” The team gasps and rare humiliation creeps into my blood. Me and my big mouth.
“Simone, take a break,” Finn says with his hands on his hips, glaring at Greg.
“I don’t need to. I quit.”
Turning back to me, Finn laughs with a headshake. “No, you don’t.”
“I do. Tell Greg his shit will be on the stoop.”
