“How do you want to play this?” Sylas asked.
“I have no fucking idea.” Ronan blew out a breath. “Taryn, why don’t you go in and ask for Serena and tell her that her sister is here in the truck and hurt.”
“What if she thinks I’m nuts and won’t come out here?”
“Then I’ll bring her in, but I’d rather her sister come out here instead of me carting Alanah around while she’s unconscious. We have no idea what sort of reception we’re going to get.”
“I’ll go with you,” Sylas said.
They got out and ventured into the hotel through the manicured front entrance. He grabbed his cell and placed a call to Alpha Black.
His assistant answered and wasn’t happy about the delay.
“I’m going to take care of my mate,” Ronan said.
“You were brought to this state through the good graces of the alpha,” Krel pointed out. “If you don’t follow through, you’re going to be in breach of contract.”
“I didn’t sign a contract.”
“There was an agreement.”
“Listen, I said I’d be there, but I’m going to attend to my injured mate first, period. You can take that or leave it, I really don’t care.”
He ended the call while Krel sputtered in anger. He really wasn’t interested in pretending to care what the male or his alpha thought about anything that Ronan did from this point forward. He knew it might get tricky with the government if he didn’t actually follow through on his plans to work for Alpha Black and the NWFA, but he’d figure it out later. Right now, he just wanted Alanah to be safe.
He saw movement in his peripheral vision and looked up to see his siblings followed by several large males and a female who looked a lot like his mate. He opened the door and pushed it with his foot so it stayed open.
“I’m Ronan,” he said as the group approached. “You must be Serena.”
“Oh! It’s Alanah!” Serena said, lurching forward.
A male grabbed her and kept her from sprinting forward. “Hold on, let’s figure out what’s going on first.”
Ronan twisted in the seat and let his legs hang out of the truck, scooting a little forward so that Alanah was visible to her sister.
“I’m Ronan and these are my siblings. Alanah is my truemate.”
Serena stopped fighting the male holding her back and gave Ronan a curious look.
“She is? How did you find her? Where? And why is she hurt?”
“Wait, wait,” another of the males said. “Let’s get into the hotel where we have some privacy. We can use one of the conference rooms.”
“That would be fine,” Ronan said. He eased from the truck and when his feet hit the concrete, Alanah moaned softly and his tiger went on alert. He paused, and when she didn’t wake or make other pained sounds, he followed the group into the hotel. They bypassed the front desk, one of the males moving ahead and opening a wooden door. Ronan and his siblings followed the group into the conference room. He was happy to see a leather couch against the wall and carried his mate there, setting her gently on her back.
He sat on the edge of the couch by her knees and took her hand.
The door shut and Ronan looked at the new people.
“Can you help her?” he asked Serena.
“Well, her natural healing ability should be working, but she looks really gaunt, like she was starved.” She tapped her chin. “Someone grab a sports drink and something to eat with sugar in it, like fresh fruit, and also some water.”
She approached slowly, then knelt on the floor next to her sister.
“I haven’t seen her in a long time.” She brushed the hair from her face. “I don’t know what happened to her, but she’s safe now. I know that, because she found her truemate and that’s special. My mate is Galen, he’s the growly guy back there.”
She nodded over her shoulder and Galen lifted a hand in greeting.
