Yvette flicks her wet hair off her shoulders. “Yeah, but we’re catching up.”

Wounded, Lewis glances at Parker and then back at his girlfriend.

Oof. Could she cut him any deeper?

Parker wraps his arms around me and kisses the side of my head. “If I’m good, it’s only because I’m with this beauty.”

There’s silence as both Lewis and Yvette stare at me.

My skin crawls. I seriously hate this sideshow thing I have going on.

“No way,” Lewis says, grabbing Yvette’s hand. “Parker is not a better kisser than me. Have you seriously been thinking about him?”

Yvette shrugs.

“Look,” Parker says awkwardly. “The rest of the group were talking about going to the fair tomorrow night. We just came over to see if you two were into the idea.”

Yvette’s eyes run up and down Parker. “Sounds like fun.”

“Yeah, man,” Lewis says, yanking on Yvette’s hand. “Sounds good.”

Lewis leads Yvette toward the rest of the group. We head over as Tyler stands with his bag and says his goodbyes.

“Ty, can you take Yvie and I home?” Lewis asks, grabbing his bag.

Tyler shrugs. “Sure, man. You’re not going home with Parker?”

“No, I just need to get home earlier,” Lewis says in a rush.

Yvette winces. “Good. I can’t wait to wash my hair.”

“I can...” Parker begins.

“It’s all good,” Lewis interrupts. “We’ll see you guys tonight, right?”

Parker lifts a hand in a confused wave. “Yeah, sure.”

Yvette wiggles her fingers in a wave. “See ya later.”

I watch them leave with Tyler and mumble. “See you guys.”

It’s not long until everyone else starts packing up and I get into Parker’s car.

“Wow, Lewis must be super peeved at you,” I say, buckling my seatbelt.

Parker gives me a doubtful look.

“He clearly wanted Yvie away from you.”

Parker grins as he reverses the car onto the dirt road. “Well, I am the superior male.”

My eyes roll. “Oh brother.”

Parker laughs. “What? No good?”

“Can you be serious for a minute?” I ask. “If he didn’t want to ride back with us, won’t it make tonight awkward?”

He shakes his head. “It won’t be a problem. Lewis and I argue over the dumbest stuff and it’s never affected our friendship.”
