I grin, letting out another swoon-filled exhale.“Wonderfully.”
“Did you kiss him to make him feel better?”
“That sounds like something out of the Parker playbook. I’m much more subtle than you.”
“Ha ha. That’s why you need me.”
I think about our hug.“Then why did I leave him with a smile on his face?”
There’s a longer pause before I get the next reply.“You’re too good, Green.”
I move to the window and peer into the lamp-lit bedroom beyond the fenceline.
Lewis leans against his desk and turns his head toward the window. His chin tilts upwards and our eyes lock. A smile dashes across his face and his hand lifts in a wave.
My heart swells and I wave back.
He moves away from the window, and I collapse on my bed before my legs completely turn to jelly.
“Wow,” I breathe. “What a night.”
Nineteen
It’s Monday afternoonat the café, and I’m still wiped after last night’s events. I kept waking throughout the night with confusing thoughts about both boys. I’m so glad there’s nothing real between me and Parker. I’m still convincing my brain all the lingering stares and hand holding are fake. My memories come through like he’s my real boyfriend, and there’s only so much I can take. Especially when things are turning around for me and Lewis.
We almost kissed. I’m sure of it. Yvette already thinks we’ve kissed. That has to mean there was a look in Lewis’s eyes that said he wanted to be with me.
I need things to hurry up and end with Parker so my thoughts can stay on only one boy.
I place a milkshake on Josie’s table and let out a loud huff. “I’m just so exhausted.”
Josie stifles a laugh, sliding the tall glass toward her. “What have you been doing?”
I plonk onto the seat adjacent to Josie. “Ugh. Too much.”
I wouldn’t normally slack off, but Maddy is having the day off. Even though she’s a chill boss, I don’t like to push my luck. Today, I’m working with Laura, which is less pressure because she’s not in charge of my paycheck.
