“He has brothers,” I mutter under my breath, lifting my phone up to answer.
“What?”
“Nothing. Have a good night, dear,” I mock.
He smiles from the door, then turning slowly, he comes back to me, stealing one more kiss before he bends to kiss my bump. “Love you,” he says.
“Love you,” I mouth, and he turns and leaves me to my call. “Hello.”
“Took your time.”
“Sorry, Dean was on his way out. Everything okay?”
I hear Bex sigh. “If you count peeing 24/7 and not being able to bend over properly as okay, then yeah, I’mokay.”
“That bad, huh?” I ask. I shift on the sofa, pulling the blanket further over me.
“What am I now… thirty weeks almost? Hang on, let me show you.” She switches the call to FaceTime.
“Bloody hell, Bex!” I remark shocked. “Are you sure you’re not carrying twins?”
“Oh, God no. Twins! The thought of carrying two makes me feel sick. I’m barely hanging on with one in there!”
I chuckle, admiring her full tummy. Her bump is solid and round, her back arching with the weight on the front. “She’s going to be big,” I tell her fondly.
“Like her father.”
Kyle walks past in the background giving me a wave.
I wave back. “How’s he doing?” I ask, knowing full well he’ll be doing everything around the house for her.
Bex smiles, looking over her shoulder at him. “I’d be lost without him.”
He gives her a wink.
“Still his fault though,” she says a little louder.
“You never complained when we were in the trying phase,” Kyle shouts.
Letting her face do the talking, Bex looks back at her phone. “Anyway, speaking of fathers, have you heard from yours yet?”
I shake my head. “Not since I called a few weeks ago.”
Bex gives me a half smile. “It’ll be hard for him. Now he knows that you know the truth, he’s probably reliving it.”
“I know,” I say with an exhale. My poor dad. He isn’t my father. But heismy dad. Nothing would ever change that. Seeing him will be good for both of us.
Bex breaks the silence. “Right, I’ve shown you mine, come on, show me yours.”
I throw the blanket off me, then stand trying to hold my phone so Bex can see my bump. “Oh my God, Madison, you’re tiny!”
“I know!” I move back to sit down. “I’m having weird cravings now. Pickles seem to be my current thing.”
“Ow yeah, dip them in something sweet.”
“Yes! Thank you. Dean thinks I’m vile.”
“Tsh, what does he know. They’re not the ones growing people.”
