“Sounds good to me,” he says taking a seat on a stool.
I get everything together and heat the meatballs in a pan. Dominick watches me and points out where everything is. And once the rolls are toasted, I place the meatballs in them.
I serve Dominick a plate and sit next to him at the kitchen island.
“I give it to Belva, she makes great meatballs.”
I nod, agreeing.
“Oh, you have some there.” Dom takes a finger and swipes the sauce from the corner of my mouth, then licks it.
We finish eating and put everything away, and Dom walks to his bar. “Drink?”
“Yes, please. The jail finally called me and told me I could come back to work.”
“That’s great, Gen.”
He passes me a drink.
“But they did inform me that once my contract ended, they would not be continuing it.”
“Fuck. I’m sorry about that.” He runs his hand over my back in a caring way.
“It’s okay. Probably for the best, anyway.”
“You never know, it could be a blessing in disguise.”
“You’re right. It could be. Plus, I still can’t believe you signed over Heaven’s Door to me.”
“It makes more sense for you to have it. Now you don’t have to do much of anything if you don’t want to.”
I smile. “I haven’t decided what I’m going to do. I would like to open some sort of speak easy club, where people get dressed up and have a fancy night out. Something classy. But I need to think about it more.”
“If you need anything from me, let me know. Are you sure you are okay with me taking over my step dad’s duties? I don’t want anything to interfere with what we have going.”
“Yeah, I know you’ll be busy for a while, until you get everything sorted out. But I’m here for the long haul.”
He smirks. “You are?” He closes the distant between us and wraps his arms around me.
“I am.”
He bends to kiss my forehead, and every time he does it, my heart melts.
“I know you heard what I told your mom.”
He gets that shit eating grin and nods. “I heard. Marriage is forever, you know.”
“I know. And I want forever with you.”
“I do, too.”
EPILOGUE
DOMINICK
Two months later
One month ago, I asked Geneva to marry me. Naturally she said yes and got to planning right away. Today, in a few short minutes, she will be Mrs. LaRocca. Even though she doesn’t have to take my last name, she insists, and it makes me smile every time I think about it.
