That was straight to the point.“Ouch! I think you just wounded my heart.” I chuckle. “My name is Declan.”

She tilts her head to the side. “Declan.” The sound of my name rolling off her tongue is like honey, and I want to hear it mid-orgasm as she screams it in pleasure. “You don’t have to walk with me, Declan.”

“I like the sound of my name coming out of your mouth, and yes, I do. My car is the black Jaguar down there.” I point towards it. She rolls her eyes. “What was that look for?”

“Nothing. It’s just, I don’t understand why guys have to tell a girl the name of their car. It’s not like it’ll make your dick any bigger,” she replies before taking a sip of her drink and making me choke on the mouthful of mine.

“My cock certainly isn’t small, and I like my car.”

She arches an eyebrow. “I bet you say that to all the girls.”

“Just the ones I like.”

She snorts mid-laugh, and it’s cute.Cute? Since when do I describe a woman as cute? She looks at me out the corner of her eye as if she’s checking me out. I feel my face flush with heat. No one has made me feel this way in a while. I like it. Her mouth says one thing while her body says something else.

“I should get going. I’ve just worked a night shift and am extremely tired, but thank you for the coffee.” She unlocks her car and walks to the driver’s side door, opening it.

“Winter,” I say. She turns to look at me. “It was lovely to meet you. I hope we see each other again soon.”

She smiles. “You too, Declan. Just don’t count your chickens before they hatch.” She winks then slides into her car.

She starts her engine, and I’m the one to wave this time. As I get into my vehicle, I realise I’m smiling for no other reason than having seen Winter. She’s playing hard to get, but I’m determined that she’ll cave soon.

WINTER

Getting into my car, I make the slow drive home. I live in Cromwell’s main town not too far from the city centre and am based for work in Clyde at the specialised birthing centre that they have there. It’s quite the commute every day, but I don’t mind it too much. It’s a peaceful drive, and it gives me a chance to unwind, depending on what sort of day I’ve had. I’m a core midwife, which makes me lucky to have set hours at the centre.

Parking the car up my drive, I’m surprised to see Autumn’s car is there. I thought she had a date last night. After our dinner, she was meeting some guy for drinks. Maybe it didn’t go well, or maybe it did, and they’re in there having sex right now. Shutting off my engine, I sit in my car for a moment and sip my drink.

Declan wanders into my thoughts, and it’s unnerving. He’s going to be a giant pain in the ass if this continues. He can have any woman he wants, so why look at me like the Big Bad Wolf who wants to eat Little Red Riding Hood in the most delicious of ways?

Walking into the café this morning, I couldn’t believe it when I saw him waiting to get a coffee. Something is alluring about him, like a magnetic pull between us. It’s something I can’t explain, and I’m not sure I want to figure it out either. The moment I saw him, I felt a rush of electric current surge through my body which was already on some weird high since I had been thinking about him all night while working. Thank goodness it was a slow night, and I could afford the distraction.

With every patient I saw with dotting fathers in their rooms, I felt a pang of jealousy as the dads were adoring to their partners and helping. I got a vision of what Declan would be like as a father. I shouldn’t have, but I couldn’t help it. Something about that man has my libido taking notice, my heart racing, and my blood pressure boiling over. I haven’t known these feelings in a very long time, and they’re certainly not welcomed, so why have they started now?

I groan loudly and lean my head back on the headrest of my car. It’s safe to say he’s gotten under my skin whether I like it or not, and I’m pretty sure he knows it. To be honest, I’m terrified of having a man in my life again; I’m scared to get hurt and feel the heartache that comes with my partner’s desertion.

Vibrators can give me orgasms.I don’t need a man for those.

A knock at my window breaks me out of my thoughts, and I look to see my younger sister Autumn standing there, giving me a confused look.

Opening the door, I get out.

“Why are you sitting out here? The fire is going, so the house is nice and warm.”

“I thought you might have brought your date home and were doing the nasty.”

She shrugs. “Nah, he wasn’t my type. How was your night?”

“Great until this morning when I bumped into the hot bartender from last night,” I reply.

Autumn’s eyes grow big like saucers. “And you talked to him?”

“I did. I thanked him for trying to come to my rescue, and I offered to buy him a coffee.”

“What happened last night that made him come to your rescue?” she asks.
