Disappointed, I decide to head home and stop in to see my sister Ravin along the way to check if she doesn’t need a hand with housework or something. She’s due to have her baby any day now, and I know her husband is out working nights this week.
Making my way out of the bar and towards the staff car park, I hear a woman hollering, “Give me my keys, asshole!” through the dimly lit area.
My entire body screams, ‘That’s my mate!’
Rushing over to where the voices are coming from, I get there just in time to witness the blonde-haired beauty kicking the other person to the ground with some swift karate move.
That’s so fucking hot.
The woman leans over the man and snatches what I think are her keys from his hand. I can’t be sure, though.
“Hey,” I say, and she whips around, fists up, ready to go again. I hold my hands up. “Whoa! Don’t hurt me. I’m here to check if you’re okay.”
She breathes heavily. In and out. “I am now. Him,” she tilts her head in the guy’s general vicinity without breaking eye contact with me before continuing, “not so much.”
“I can see that.” I chuckle, stepping closer to her. Inhaling deeply, I realise there’s the scent of a wolf in the air. It’s not the woman. She is definitely human. It’s coming from the guy currently nursing his bruised side. “I thought I could be of assistance, but I see you have the situation handled.” I inhale the intoxicating and addictive scent of vanilla and lilies. I’m overcome with an urge to throw her over my shoulder, take her back to my place, and see if this mating feeling is real. Worst case scenario, if it’s not, perhaps we could enjoy some multi-orgasmic sex.
“Self-rescuing princess right here,” she says, making me laugh.
I move closer to the guy and recognize him immediately. His name is Danny, and he’s Edward’s, my fellow Alpha’s son. He’ll get an ass-kicking should he need it, but not at my hand. “Do you want to press charges?” I ask the woman as I watch the guy’s eyes widen in horror. He knows I have a policeman in my clan.
“No, I just want to go to work, but if you work here, you should probably tell your boss that this guy was harassing my sister and me earlier.”
I look at him curiously, then drag him to his feet. “Were you now?”
He gulps. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologise to me. Apologise to her.” I force him forward, and he looks to the woman.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have done that.” The man is physically shaking in my hands.
She nods. “Thank you.”
“You get in your car and head to wherever you need to be. I’ll guard my buddy so he doesn’t follow you,” I offer, slapping him on the back, and digging my claws in. He winces beside me.
She smiles and fuck me if it doesn’t make me the happiest man alive. I wouldn’t mind seeing it after sex. I bet she’s gorgeous in the throes of passion. “Thanks. I appreciate that.”
“You’re welcome.”
She gets into her car and gives me a small wave before she drives away. As soon as her headlights are gone, I spin the guy around to me.
“I know your Alpha, and I can guarantee he will hear of this. If I catch you again, I’ll personally rip you to shreds.” I push him backwards, making him stumble.
Danny scurries away, repeatedly looking over his shoulder to make sure I’m not following him. I’ll go and see his Alpha tomorrow and tell him what happened. For now, I want to head home and release the stress of the day. Maybe I’ll release the pressure in my cock, too, thinking of that pretty blonde self-rescuing princess.
Climbing into my black Jaguar, I can’t help but think of the pretty little human I seem to have found.Mate, ha! I still don’t believe it.I wouldn’t mind having some fun with her between the sheets, though. But there is one thing I regret not doing: getting her name. It’s a shame really, but I’m hoping, now that I’ve found her, that I’ll see her again and soon. I hope that she felt the same pull to me that I feel towards her. I don’t want to believe she’s my mate. My heart says one thing, but my head doesn’t want to agree.
Shifters don’t mate with humans—especially not with Alphas.

I enter the café to buy my usual morning coffee, flicking my head in acknowledgement to the baker, Edward, behind the counter. He’s the owner and operator of the place and the local bar in town, but more importantly, he’s the Alpha to the rival pack of wolves within the area of Central Otago. I’m the Alpha of our clan. I call it that because we aren’t just made up of wolves. We have bears, a white tiger, a few storks, a leopard, and a little blue penguin. Yes, we are definitely a diverse bunch.
I chuckle to myself over Rafe’s transformation into a little blue penguin as Edward comes over to me. “Everything alright?” he asks.
I shake my head. “We had some of your boys on our land last night, annoying the dining patrons; the female ones in particular. I had words, but if they step foot on my land again, we will have a problem.”
