“She’s a beaut, isn’t she?”
“You seem to know your way around quite well. Were you born here?”
He makes a face. “No. I was born in Texas, just outside of Dallas.”
“Ah, so that’s where that little ad lib came from.”
“When lying, it’s best to stick to the truth as much as you can.”
“A liar’s code? I never knew such a thing existed.”
“Yup. Us liars and thieves have to keep ourselves honest somehow.”
I laugh. “If you say so.”
“I do. Now, let’s get in line.”
It’s amazing how comfortable I am around Flynn. Sure, there’s an air of mystery around him, but he doesn’t scare me. And I sure as heck don’t get an Odin vibe from him.
“What are you frowning for?” He holds up his hand. “Wait. Let me guess. You’re thinking about how much trouble you’re going to be in.”
“Basically.”
“Then I say we need to have as much fun as we can.” He eyes me. “Your stepdad isn’t going to call the cops, is he?”
I shake my head because I really don’t think he will. No, if he wants to find me, he’ll use his resources within the Mafia. I don’t say this part aloud, though. I mean, I don’t want to scare off Flynn.
Ahead, I see a security checkpoint.
“Is that why you wanted to know if Odin was the type to call the cops?”
“Yup. Just act cool.”
We make our way through the metal detector without as much as a second glance from the police officers working. Flynn takes my hand outside as we board the ferry.
“Most people like to sit on the right side so they can see the Statue of Liberty, but I’m partial to the less crowded side myself.”
“That works with me. How long is the trip?”
He looks up at the sky. “Wind is coming in pretty good, so we’ll be there in about fifteen minutes.”
“Wow. Impressive.”
He gives me a mischievous grin. “It also says it on the schedule board behind you.”
Glancing over my shoulder, I laugh. “Well played.”
We go to the left side, leaning against the railing. He was right. It’s less crowded over here. A horn blares, making me jump. Flynn’s arm goes around my shoulder.
“I’ve got you, babe.”
I believe him, too.
I say, “If I forget to say it later, thank you.”
“No need to thank me. I’m the one who gets to spend the day with you, so I’m definitely the winner here.” He smiles. “Okay, speed round getting to know you. Just say the first thing that comes to mind.”
I nod. “Okay.”
