Then, I check Zoe’s location. Something tells me that she’s going to do something crazy today, and I need to keep an eye on her.
Because if I don’t, who will?
CHAPTERNINE
THE BAR
Zoe
Of course I don’t wait for Liam to come home. Instead, I convince Scotty to take me to the swanky, newly-opened bar in Crestwood. I’m feeling way too emotionally raw to hang around his house andwait.I need to numb the pain the only way I know how.
When Scotty shows up just before six, I shoot a quick text to Liam.
going out w scotty. b back late so please dont worry.
He doesn’t respond right away.
Scotty leans over and kisses me before making the twenty-minute drive to Crestwood. We chat about his band and my classes, and I casually mention that I’m thinking about possibly doing a minor in English, because I’m enjoying Liam’s poetry class so much. He tells me about his job working at The Stand, a fried chicken food truck. I’m holding my phone on my lap in case Liam responds, so when the phone vibrates against my bare thigh, I unlock it in record time.

Jesus, Zoe. It’s like you’re incapable of doing what I ask you.
I smirk.

Overlord
As long as you’re living under my roof (and going out to drink illegally, I should add) I’ll wait up until the moment you open the door.
My breath catches.

You know, there is such a thing as grammar and spellcheck for text messages. Maybe give it a whirl sometime.
My lips pull into a small smile.
