Chapter Twenty

Morgan looked back to the backseat of her car as she waited on the stoplight to turn green. There lay two business suits, fresh from the drycleaners. The worker had given her some trouble about picking them up. Morgan didn't have a number or drop off slip. She thought that was odd that Mr. Slade would forget to give her something to pick up his clothes. Maybe he was just too busy.

Fortunately, after a long conversation, the worker had allowed her to take his things. Morgan hoped that this didn't become a regular part of her daily job. She turned back to face forward and started to stare off into space. A small smile played on her lips as an image of Mr. Slade slipped into her mind. He was gorgeous, and he was hers.

A loud honk from behind the car had Morgan jumping in her seat and Mr. Slade fading from her thoughts. Her eyes flicked up to see that the light was green. She headed toward Slade, Inc. as another mental picture of her boss ran through her head.

Soon Morgan was pulling into the parking lot. Before she got far, though, an unnerving scene had her slowing her car to a crawl. There, next to his car, stood Mr. Slade and Shay. Morgan stopped her car out far enough to not draw attention to herself.

"I thought they were both gone for the morning?" Was that why I was sent on an errand?

Morgan watched in horror as Shay touched Mr. Slade and then turned him toward her. Connor, stop her. Step back from her! Her heart seemed to slow to a standstill as she watched Shay cup her boss's face. A few seconds later and Morgan's heart seemed to start up and almost beat out of her chest because they were kissing. Mr. Slade reached up, grabbing the other woman's waist.

"Motherfucker." Morgan's hands started to shake against her steering wheel.

The kiss seemed passionate and even desired on both their parts. An ugly sob rose up Morgan's throat as the pair continued kissing and touching each other. The disgusting memory of Todd doing the same thing floated through her head for a few seconds. She couldn't take it any longer. She couldn't watch anymore. Morgan turned her wheels and let her car creep from the parking lot, back toward the road.

It's done.

Shay ran her hand down his chest. She was soon slipping it into his waistband and down into his slacks. Just as her fingers grazed the top of his pubic hair, a sudden surge of morality entered him. Connor pulled back from the kiss and quickly grabbed her hand. Her beautiful eyes popped open as her other hand still held the back of his head.

"No, Shay."

"Sir, you're hard. I can feel it in your pants. You want me."

"I said no. Even if that were true, which I'm not saying it is, I need to find Morgan and talk to her. I can't just write her off." I love her. Those words swirled around and around in his head.

"Mr. Slade, please. Let me take care of you." Shay pulled hard on her hand, trying to push it deeper into his slacks.

Connor gripped her wrist harder and pulled it free from his pants. "Shay, go home."

He tried to step back from her, but she wouldn't let go of the back of his head. Connor swiftly grabbed both of her wrists and twisted them away from himself. He could see by her expression that he was hurting her. He could also see that she wanted more.

"Connor, you are making a huge mistake!"

He released her, pushing her back just slightly. "That's probably true."

Connor turned back to his car and quickly opened the door. He could feel Shay's displeasure and her eyes on him, but he ignored her. He had one thing on his mind right now. Morgan. Once he had his phone, he slammed his car door shut and started to walk away from it and Shay.

"Connor! You won't find anyone better than me!"

He tried to ignore her again, but she started to follow him. Damn it. Connor knew that if he wanted this to end, he would have to give her something. He turned around on a dime. It was so abrupt that Shay almost smashed into him.

"Shay, I have a very important business call to make. Go home, I'll see you tomorrow."

"Tomorrow?" Her appealing eyes widened.

"Yes, take the rest of the day off. I have too much to handle."

She cocked her head to the side before smiling. "But what about my work?"

"It'll be there tomorrow. Now, please, just let me get back to it." Connor just wasn't sure what the "it" was.

Shay looked like she was going to torture him longer. She twisted her fingers together while swaying her hips. Connor let out a deep breath. "Shay, go home and come back tomorrow or just go home and never return. Those are your choices, at the moment."

Her movements stalled for a few seconds before her smile fell off. Finally, she whispered her response. "Ok, boss."

Shay then leaned in to kiss his cheek. He allowed it. Connor just wanted her gone. Giving her a bit of hope was the only way to end this fight, even if it was an asshole move. He turned away from her, starting to stroll off through the parking lot. He pressed Morgan's name in his phone.

"Come on. Pick up." He fortunately didn't hear anymore from Shay as he started pacing in the lot, waiting.

The phone rang twice, and then an unfamiliar tone sounded. Connor pulled the phone away from his face to look at the screen. She had dismissed his call. He groaned as his arms tensed. He tried again, and the call went straight to voicemail. Morgan had blocked him.

Goddamn it, Morgan.
