I have been trying to find the perfect time to bring this up, but my face was buried in her pussy for most of the time, and it completely slipped my mind. “I have to leave town for a little bit.”

“What?” she sits up.

“Yeah. I talked to Mariya, and she has leads on someone who could help me find out what really happened with your parents.”

“Really?! Where?”

“Talmuck.”

“But that’s so far away, Gabriel.”

“I know, but this is important. I will be gone for a week, ten days max. And hopefully, I’ll come back with answers for you.”

“Why can’t I go with you?” her fingertips brush up and down my bare chest.

“Because I am meeting a necromancer. There is no way we are keeping the secret of your existence if you tag along.”

“Oh. I see,” she says, disappointed. “It’s okay. I get it, Gabe. I’ll keep busy while you’re away.”

“I want you to stay indoors until I’m back. You can have all your work sent over. Utilize my office. Just don’t leave the house until I get back. Please, for safety,” I plead.

Her brows furrow in protest. “You know I can handle myself, Gabriel.”

“I know you can handle yourself in most situations, but these are supernatural beings we’re talking about. It’s for your safety,” I insist. “I’m trying to protect you,” I say, frustration tainting my voice.

“By treating me like I can’t take care of myself? May I remind you that I have been doing that on my own for years,” Jade retorts, her eyes narrowed.

“I just want you safe.” I insist, the words coming out more forcefully than I intend.

“It feels suffocating, not safe,” she replies, her tone strained.

“But you could be in danger. I need to know you’re safe,” I argue, my voice tight with worry.

“I understand that, but you’re smothering me,” Jade counters, her frustration matching mine.

“I’m leaving to find answers about your parents. I won’t be here to help you if something happens. With Mariya’s protective wards, I feel like you’ll be okay here.” I explain, hoping she’ll understand.

“I get it, but it doesn’t mean I can’t take care of myself while you’re gone. I’m not a child,” she shoots back.

“It’s not about that. There are dangers that you haven’t ever had to deal with before. Remember the vampires, in your apartment?” I press, trying to make her see the risks.

“What kind of life will I have if I’m locked away, unable to live it?” Her question hangs in the air as she storms out before I can answer.

Why is it always a fight with this woman?

Hopefully, I can make her understand. I’m doing this for her.

Chapter 24

Jade

Iwake up to an empty bed. Gabriel is already gone. Downstairs, Mariya is cooking up a storm in the kitchen. The smell of breakfast hits me before I even enter the room. “Morning, Jade!” Mariya greets me with a warm smile.

“Need a hand?” I offer, jumping in to help set the table.

Liam charges in, full of life and chatter. “Hey, Jade! Wanna play?” he asks, eyes gleaming with excitement.

“Sure thing, buddy! Right after breakfast.”
